Eric, do you know what stock HU you'd need? If not, PM me the VIN # and I'll look up how it was equipped originally.

I was thinking it would be amusing to use a gutted CDC-1 case as a place to hide an additional amp- good to know Rob could make one in Marine blue.

I have the cdc-1 and the wool carpet cover. It's just the HU that is not working.

Well I know this thread is old, but I have found a combination that works well together and with the acoustics of the car(there are none when it running down the road at 80!).
Like some others, I like the Kenwood product's upper end "eXcelon" line. I chose the X799 for the 5 band eq, HD radio, 4 volt outputs and it's the top of the range of eXcelon units that has buttons. The X8oo and X9oo have that stupid menu thing. "aint nobody got time for that". What ya give up by not going to the X900 unit is a better FM section and a 13 band EQ. But unless you are doing a non running, battery only, stereo competition, I'm not sure how much the super high end HUs and their better FM will help ya anyway. ($180).
I removed both the tweeter and mid-range drivers from both front doors and installed a single 2 way 4" Polk db401($60) in each door using the stock screw on grille when I reupholstered the door cards. Matching 2 way 6 1/2 inch Polk db 651 ($100) are in the B pillars in the back and are also inside the stock square plastic grille. The far rear hatch area speakers were removed and a single Infinity Basslink 200 watt 10" Subwoofer sits behind the rear passenger seat.($200) When I removed the old Alpine unit and the "Bluepoint" amp from under the passenger side floor cover, I cleaned up all the wiring and installed a 6 place fuseblock where the old amp was. The sub and the head unit have their own fuses as a result. While my whole system cost less than $600 the match of the components seems to work very well. Piano and snares are crisp and clean, the attack on a rimshot will pierce your ears, and the tight clean bass will pull the air from your lungs. Yet, the head unit is only hitting about 19 watts per channel.
Anyway, if you're looking for a "not too expensive, but quality sounding system" I feel like I have stumbled onto a winner in the Kenwood, Polk, Infinity components. Thank you for your time...that is all.

Found this link http://www.bergvillfx.com/index.php/...car-audio.html over in the 996 forum. I'm not familiar with Continental brand radios, but they sure look period correct for 928's.

Did Pioneer change the face of the DEH 80-PRS to be more shiny? Some of the pictures seem to show that the screen to the right side of the unit is somewhat small with a larger matte black surround, like where it says Pioneer. Other pictures seem to show that The entire right side of the radio is more of the shiny screen material then a matte surround. Just curious if they changed the look.

Mine is very shiny, which I find annoying. The screen is not very good, in terms of resolution, and the UI is awful (I still have no idea how to get the damn tuner to find active stations) but the sound quality and self-tuning is pretty damn good.

The Pioneer DEH-80PRS. It was about $240 at Amazon. I used a new fader **** from an early 928. I had to sand the bottom of it to fit. It was ~$8.
