Not an audiophile solution, but it sure looks right:

I went back to the original amp and fader, too. The sound is surprisingly good, for 30 year old electronics/speakers. Plus I got a hundred bucks for the Alpine amp I used to use.

P99 is an incredible SQ unit [no amp], It all depends on the features you want, I would say in a blind test 90% of decent units will sound the same.
Do you need CD anymore? A USB stick will do if the HU supports it; currently in the Cayenne its our prefered media source.
Careful about bluetooth streaming of music - usually you still need to select music on the phone, in Oz thats a no-no with the police, you need a dedicated full speed ipod support to use the phone.
I have used a single din flip out screen for years, I find it doesnt interfere with the a/c vents, and I dont fiddle with temp. I often close it when cd listening, and most have a half close function, so you touch the close button , it folds 'flat' , you adjust and it goes back up after a few seconds.

P99, awesome sound quality, full DSP in the HU, where you normally require a seperate DSP unit; like with the Alpine I use. $1200 is cheap compared to here!!

Cut and pasted from a review for a better description:
"Under the hood this thing is packed with many awesome features. Many of them are from their award winning ODR system from almost two decades ago. Features such as L/R Independent 31-Band Digital Equalizer, Auto Time Alignment and Auto EQ, and 24-Bit AKM DACs are just some of the features any enthusiast would be dreaming about. Also included is a 4-way Digital Signal Processor Crossover. The level of adjustment is unbelievable, especially considering everything is built-in. It allows you to alter settings separately, including time alignment between speakers and left and right channels, for tweeter, midrange, midbass and subwoofer, as well as the ability to adjust the entire frequency band from 20Hz to 20kHz independently. All this is possible due to the 32-Bit Binary Floating-Point DSP for high-precision and highspeed sound processing which offers all the horsepower needed to do all these tasks with a high level of accuracy.
In a high-end product like this you would expect great build quality and it is superb. It has a copper chassis, as you might expect. (That of course eliminates magnetic induction noise.) The printed circuit board gets the same attention to detail: High slew-rate operational amplifiers used in high-end home audio for its precise gain and sound linearity characteristics along with custom-made capacitors to Pioneer’s “Reference Standard” fill the printed circuit board. The circuit trace path lengths are symmetrically laid out left and right and kept as short as possible to minimize noise and maintain sonic purity."

I used to bother looking for flac capable HU's - but eventually decided the noise floor in a car makes high bit-rate mp3 acceptable. I use flac in the house.
If you want to play flac in a car, your best bet is to use something like an android device to play the flac format to line-out, possibly via a usb DAC. You might be able to stream via Bluetooth - I haven't looked into it in a couple of years.
The headache required to play flac in a car means I just use something to bulk convert flac to mp3, and just enjoy the simpler access, even if dealing with more than one format is a PITA.
Or you could adopt the apple lossless format, and probably use that with an ipod-friendly car stereo (I'm just guessing here - I don't own an ipod).

Gotta agree - The JVC Arsenal sounds great, looks great and is color adjustable so I can get it orange to match the rest of the dash lights. Hooked it up to a RockFord Fosgate mini amp in the stock location.

Has direct iPod/iPhone (w/ control), SDCard, USB drive, radio, Bluetooth streaming, internet radio, line in) - I use the SDcard a lot more than I thought I would... (MP3, AAC, WMA, WAV, OGG)
As a Parrot - it has an excellent integrated hands free phone (best I've used) with voice dialing. It also has voice recognition for music selection - just say track or artist name and it plays - actually works quite well - but sometimes makes some interesting selections...
It has some limited apps with GPS location aware services - however you need a wireless internet connections (tethered phone or USB 3G/LTE modem for most access) .
It has map apps (google) but not really GPS point to point navigation (yet...?)
It does have some location aware Apps - but honestly so far the number of Apps is very disappointing - hope that picks up...
The on/off switching is a little odd - it doesn't resume when you start the car - its on - but you have to tell it to play something. I do like that you can use the play/pause button to play/mute even real time streams (radio/line-in) - nice idea.
Overall I like it - but hope the Apps situation picks up

I'll post some pictures when I am a little further along...
It works for me because its nice and clean and has a simple matt black face, not too shiny or bling looking.
I'd like to tone down the white button a bit, and add a rubber **** (a 928 one of course)...
