Default HELP WITH A STRANGE VIN NUMBER

I am thinking about purchasing a EURO 928 which the owner says is a 1978. All of the research I seem to be able to do is stating the VIN is a 1980. Can someone give me a definitive on the VIN?

I did verify that I have the VIN correct as I have a picture of the VIN. Is there anyone that is versed in pre 81 928 VINS?

It is 928 106 023 15

Your help is Hugely appreciated.

That reads like a 928 part number, not a VIN.

Well, a Euro VIN can be found near the radiator, so I give them a "C-", grading on a curve.

Sure, but is it a 78 or 80 radiator?

1978 928 VIN Range - 9288200001 - 1139
1980 928 VIN Range - 92A0810011 - 1649

Look on the fender just under the edge of the hood towards the rear, or the driver door jam.

Understand why you would all think I am CRAZY but I am looking at a picture of the Title with THAT listed as the VIN. Could it be possible that someone transposed the Radiator Part number for the VIN.

When I put that number into an online VIN database tool it comes back as a 1980 928 EURO 4.5 litre.

VERY STRANGE....

At some point in its life, somebody at a motor vehicle registration place probably was given or pulled the numbers from the top of the radiator. Here is a pic of an early radiator.

Talk to you local DMV regarding the title mess. The VIN should be stamped on the passenger side fender under the hood about where the washer fluid bottle is located.

Not in early MY cars. In those its stamped on side of the engine bay close to ignition unit and + post.

Correct stamped into a flat spot readable from under the fender....Getting it "corrected"depends on the DMV you have to deal with.....and what they think of grey market cars

That is a generic title. Should work with all 928's that have that radiator.

That title could be worth more than the car itself if you are a thief. You could steal early cars all day long and have proof of title.

Where are you located (state), assuming USA?

If its a Euro, there exist import records that can be tapped to solve.

May be a VIN plate in engine compartment near hood latch.

Pictures would help.

Did you buy or are you considering buying?
