Default How much gasoline to start car?

OK here's a technical spec question for ya.

How much gasoline is used to fire up a 5 litre 928 engine? I'm wondering about gasoline usage caused by starting the car multiple times each day.

Related: what is the expected rate of fuel consumption at low idle?

You will idle more than starting it.

its that "leave fluorescent lights on to save the energy of start-up burst" which..is crap too.

until your ballast burns out from turning them on and off and has to be replaced thus washing away your "energy saving profits" of turning them off all the time ..don't get sum'tn for nut'n!

You were probably still wrinkle-free then.

Carbs used to need pumping to start, and I think that took a fair amount of fuel, but FI can restart efficiently enough it was worthwhile to stop/start the motor at traffic lights. With a hybrid electric the motor might not even start in normal use.

It depends on the temperature of the engine. The colder it is, the more fuel is required to start it.

Must be a pulse width defined in the fuel map for start-up conditions. I'd be curious to know how soon the computer backs it down once the engine's running ...

LH 2.3 has a warm up map. A stock one looks like this:

Code:
ºC	-31	-24	-15	-8	0	8	14	23	31	39	50	63	75	95	97
ºF	-24	-11	5	18	32	46	57	73	88	102	122	145	167	203	207
	158	128	103	85	72	59	49	35	29	24	18	11	4	0	0
It also has a starter cranking map. The colder it is, the larger the starting pulse width:

Code:
ºC	-31	-24	-15	-8	0	8	14	23	31	39	50	63	75	95	97
ºF	-24	-11	5	18	32	46	57	73	88	102	122	145	167	203	207
	104	92	68	56	46	35	24	14	12	10	6	2	0	0	0
Acceleration enrichment also has a map that ramps down pulse width as engine temperature increases.

Lots of variables but most seem to think that idling for 10 seconds is the B/E for shutting off the engine at stop lights to save fuel. A few state up to 30 seconds but that may predate modern fuel injection. The "automatic stop/start" is becoming more common as more cars are push button start which adapts well to additional computer control.

On my GT idle consumption on a warm engine is about 3 Liter per hour.
