Unhappy The New 928 Boat Anchor. (UPDATE)

I concede. Unfortunately I think my shark has driven its last mile. Now with the transmission giving out, it's just to much. Figures to, I just filled up the tank up and put new tires on about a month ago. Just my luck. Well it was good while it lasted I guess.

Now the question is what to do with it. I would like to sell it rather than part it out, but I doubt I would get much of anything out of it. So if anyone is interested, or you know anyone who might be interested, let me know. I would like to get a couple grand out of it, but i'll take what I can. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

What is the transmission doing? Sure it is failing? How about throwing a used trans from 928 International in it? The half price sale on used parts is going on right now....

Got to ask, have you checked the fluid level in the trans?

With only 80k miles on it? What caused the early death of this shark?

Take a deep breath. Put it under the cover for a while and reflect. Don't do anything rash. Maybe you want to loan the chainsaw you used to cut the xmas tree down to a neighbor for a while. Then consider your options.

Every time I hit that entrance ramp to the highway, hear that engine roar and feel those tires grip the road I remember why I deal with the hardships of classic car ownership.

So, the bad news is that as a US '83 it is not worth a lot of money. Nor are the parts. The good news it that I am pretty sure you can get a used tranny for that car for a song.

No...a tranny swap in a toyota small pickup from the 80s is pretty damned easy.

Add another $200 to what Speedtoys listed for new converter bearings, a primary pump re-seal (couple of o-rings and an oil seal) along with a bolt kit to replace the drive plate rivets, fresh fluid and filter and you're in business.

Some what serendipitously, I snapped this pic this morning at 928Intl. Glad to have a use for it in such a timely fashion.

A used $500 transmission is less than two car payments on on a Honda Civic!

why all the hate on the 83? Your 79 is all that hot? my 83 runs strong, it's reliable and easy to fix! I think some of you guys are such snobs.

I have the automatic that was originally in the estate at my shop at Thunderhill.....it worked great....it had 143k on it when the odometer broke....then about 70 hours on track.....only removed it to install the S4 LSD unit.....

If you want it.....I'll let it go cheap since its well worn.....but it never slipped or anything weird...

Thanks for all the encouragement people. This is still the best web forum on the web, and it's all because of people like you!!

To answer some questions, it has way more than 80K, thats just what it had when I bought it. It's been a daily driver for 5 yrs now. Has to pushing 200k. The fluid level is fine. It leaks like a siv, but I always try to keep the level up (although I will admit I may have let that lag a couple of times). As for what it's doing, it's making noises I wouldn't expect out of a cat in a woodchipper. Its been shifting real hard for several weeks, and on the way home from smog the other day (which it failed ), there was a loud grinding (like metal on metal, and parts breaking) and I could feel the resistance as I drove it.

So that brings us to our (.........sorry, MY) options. I already thought of the half off sale at 928INTL. Problem is, they don't have one in stock. I'm sure some other place has one, but now I have to think about shipping. I'm still considering the offer IcemanG17, and thanks!!

I did some calling to have it rebuilt. No one in Bako will touch it. Trans-Mister in Anehiem will do it, but for about $2500. I'd rather have a rebuilt one from 928INTL for the same price. OH wait, none in stock. Not to mention the $700 the guy down the street is gonna charge me to take it out. Yes, I should do it myself, but I just don't have the proper tools and help to get it done efficiently myself.

Having said that, even IF I could somehow get it all done, I still have a car that won't pass smog. OH, AND needs a paint job, and an interior. I AM going to wait until next year to make any final decisions, but i'm just tired of the loosing battle. I just want to drive and enjoy the car, not work on it all the time and hope to hell something doesn't break on the way to work. What a sales pich, hu?
