Default Tranny taking a dump ............ ?

Not sure, but I think my transmission is on it's last leg. Shifting hard (haven't checked the vaccume line yet), making odd noises, and smelled like I drove it from Dallas with no fluid in it (leaks like a siv, but fluid level is fine ......... for now). My question, is it better to have that one rebuilt, or replace it all to gether?

I would replace it with a good used one.

It's getting almost impossible to find a used, low mileage transmission for one of these vehicles, now that they are are almost 30 years old. Seldom will exchanging an unknown condition transmission with unknown miles on it turn out to be a good idea....especially since it requires so much labor to get them in and out.

Have it rebuilt, by someone who knows what they are doing....and make sure that the differential gets rebuilt, at the same time. It's really silly to have these done by the "Mercedes" transmission "experts" who simply remove the differential, clean the outside (sometimes), and throw it back on.

Rebuilding and resealing that unit is part of the job.

Eric
I have the 84 4 speed open diff that came out of the Estate.....it had 143k miles on it when the odometer broke + about 70 hours on track race time....never missed a shift.....ran great with just a fluid-filter change...... Never say than more than 195F from it either...I only pulled it to install a rebuilt 88 S4 LSD....

Its just sitting in my shop at Thunderhilll collecting dust....how about $250? I would say it should last for a while, since I never had a problem with it.....

oops, your right. sorry.

Thanks fop all the input people. It finally took the perverbial dump on the way back from smog inspection (whiich it failed ). I'm inclined to fix it the best I can and sell it. I don't want to, but I just can't seem to make any ground on it. I guess I have to decide what kind of money i want to dump into it.

Used trannies 1/2 of do not include rebuilding...but they do carry a 1yr warranty.

Mark has been _spectatular_ on warranty issues.
