Ron - I believe it will fit either 5spd or Auto consoles. A slight concern is finger clearance between the shift knob (either version) and the new location of the HVAC controls - they are much closer now. With my Auto I will learn to live with it, but on a 5spd it might be a hassle in the forward gear lever positions to not bang your knuckles on the HVAC knobs.

Just switch to a Jager shift knob - problem solved!

He has several different styles and materials.

I would consider this a dead project ATM.

There hasn't been significant update or progress on this in ~1yr.

J. Feather is working on something now as well, that with his modifications on a custom one at a time basis, appears to be more likely to be available, however, in competition with his time for fender liners.

Some people are in denial.

Id be happy to see a post with a picture of something done...something working...something -in- a car.

Indeed.

Does anybody know if the double DIN chassis size standard also defines the mounting hole pattern for the sides on the stereo chassis?

Ninespub 12-13-2012 10:32 AM

BUMP! Crickets?

Still here! Working out the mounting details to be sure all standard 2XDIN stereo chassis' will screw right in without needing a mounting sleeve. Fit into my leather console is great, and the improved mounting for the HVAC/warning strip is done.

Just a quick update on progress. The first field test on a leather console, older vacume/cable controlled system is complete and fit well with an Alpine 2XDIN headunit with cage. Unfortunately I could not avoid having a mount cage due to order of assembly problems! No clearance problems behind the stereo. The older style cable controls need to be extended or replaced with longer because of the new location for the HVAC head. A second field test is pending on a 87 with vinyl console, and my 80 with leather has it fitted but no stereo yet. I'll trim mine with 3M vinyl, but it could be covered with leather or vinyl material as desired.

Looking good to me I have seen them in person lookes even better in real life

BigAl1 02-12-2013 01:20 AM

Thanks Paul - I still have your parts in my trunk, need to stop by sometime and return them!

BigAl1 02-26-2013 12:12 PM

OK, last call for suggestions to add or improve the concept. Updates per the first field test are done, pending on the second test with vinyl console. PM for pricing info.

Does a double DIN clear that early (big) double vacuum pod for the console vent control?

Well you know I'd still vote for updated more modern and smaller HVAC head , what do you propose in the lower area where the 2 holes are? Clock & Hazard if this is an early car?

Is there a side view of the shifter - it seems awfully close?

Alan
