Default 1993 928 Lite Weight Battery Suggestions

Hi All,

RE: 93 GTS, 5spd, usually on a battery tender recommended by Roger, when not on the road. I take it out at least once a month for a 20 ~100 mile road trip. It is bone stock. Current mileage aprox 96K

Any suggestions on a lite weight battery? Assuming there is one that exist for the 928 that is under $250

I read some old "general" threads on 928 batteries.
I can always default to:

1. Interstate MTP91

2. Interstate MTP-3

NOTE: I am just a fan of lite weight stuff, within reason of course. I am not OCD / retentive about it.

Thank you for the input.

I think its a safe bet I will not have to worry about a door ding.

Recent thread dug into this, consensus, save weight on something other than the battery.

If you are gungho and careful one of the Odyssey racing batteries might work. PC680 15 lbs $150, starts a 928 maybe 5 or 6 times reliably then needs charging.

I use the odyssey battery with no issues. have run it for over 10 years now. starts the car fine. always starts the car fine, BUT, it doesnt have a huge capacity for running the stereo for very long! its a 14am hour battery , when the stock one is more like 60amp hour. other than that, its the same. (lighter weigiht, and much smaller, but has near the same cold cranking amp capability to start the car)

Buy a battery designed to start the car on a BAD DAY.

Not a Kibort "I never have bad days" battery.

Everyone has that bad day..a select few find out how much amperage lived in that saved lead they didnt buy.

So Mark, is it the current or the voltage that creates the torque or HP that starts the car?

The concern with a street driven car and something like the PC680 is that sitting at a stop light in the rain at night with wipers, headlights, defroster front and rear, and radiator fan all running, generally the alternator can't keep up so you run off the battery, and these don't have much reserve.

Have you tried Amsoil Battery Rub yet?

Wax on..wax off...

Ditto on Odyssey - but the 680 might be a little light for a street car. I use the 680 in the Griffith with little electronics. Use the 925 in the race car which depends on minimum ECU voltage to function. I also have three other Odysseys in use. One failure after 5 years was replaced by Odyssey due to a bad connection between the top post and the side screw in post.

Unless its a race car where weight is critical why buy anything but the stock sized battery - it really makes no sense... You will regret it

- Initially because it will be more expensive
- You'll likely have to extend the ground strap to connect to it
- You'll likely have to fabricate a new hold-down mechanism
- When you fully deplete it due to some starting problem - after not so many tries..
- If your alternator ever fails it probably won't get you home (or to a shop)
- A PPC680 for e.g. has only 17Ah (Vs 75Ah) with reserve capacity of only ~25min
- When you need to replace it - you will have to wait for one you order to arrive
+ There is no pro-rated easy Auto store warranty
+ If you can't wait - you will have to buy a stock like battery you didn't want at full price

So Why? this isn't the place to save weight... Run on a 1/2 empty tank instead...?

Alan

And BTW I do have a PC680MJ in my 928 - it's a great little battery
- Mine is in addition to the stock battery as a backup for when the stock battery dies
- And it will die in the Arizona heat.

I know you said below 250.00..... But have any of you checked out the new Lithium Ion car batteries? I'm not buying one any time soon, but just so you know. A Group 34 is 9.5 lbs. Light weight but Astronomically priced. I'm thinking Ouch every time I look at the price. Jeg's sells a Group 34 L/Ion for 1203.99
If you need more CCA their 15.5 pounder costs 1900.00 Ouch again.

But the 928 takes a Group 48 or 49 (or maybe 41 in really old buggers)
