Makes little difference how much a "rebuilt" master costs since it is foolish to run one....some places you can save money other places it makes little sense. Rebuilts have NO quality standards and each "rebuilder" figures out how to do it as cheaply as possible....

There is a rebuild kit 928 355 913 00 for $100 (Porsche).
Ledee - Roger has sent me elsewhere when he knows of parts available more cheaply than he stocks them. I don't think you will find it better than this.

Three things that are a must for anyone owning, maintaining, and especially resurrecting a 928:

1. Get the Morehouse CD collection - includes the Factory Workshop Manual (WSM), PET (parts diagrams/part number references), tech bullitens, and a wealth of other useful and interesting information.
2. Get to know the 928 specific vendors who frequent these forums. They are not merely "parts pushers", but are true 928 enthusiasts who know these cars inside out and will get you the right parts cost effectively. They also own and drive these cars.
3. Spend some serious time using the seach function on this forum using keywords on any variety of topics. The wealth of knowledge here is second to none. In my experience, almost every issue I have run accross has been discussed here at some point in the past.

The M.O. I try to follow when trying to understand an issue is:
1. find the topic in the WSM
2. identify the related parts in PET
3. conduct keyword searches on this forum
4. post a question seeking additional insight
5. contact the 928 specific vendor(s) of choice for parts options

That said, keep posting your updates and questions, as most here are more than willing to help someone who is genuinely interested in learning and keeping these great cars on the road.

Probably worth the cost of a phone call to ask

Odds are its brand-new from Porsche - like most of the stuff Roger sells (aftermarket enhancements and NLA items notwithstanding).

Seriously - when I first got a 928, I made lists of parts and prices from places like rockauto, vertex, pelican etc. After a while I stopped doing that and just order from a couple of places; mostly Roger and 928intl - depending on what it is and how fast I need it (shipping LA to Sydney is faster than Texas to Sydney). You will find Roger is cheaper than most sources of new Porsche parts.

edit: also worth mentioning, don't buy cheap new parts off ebay.. especially not stuff like water pumps and fuel pumps. Odds are they're counterfeit or poorly made knock-offs and can cause a lot of expensive harm.

Try to cheap out, end up spending more money, still doesn't work right, get bigger head ache, call Roger, get the right part, get it done right, then the headache goes away. It only takes a couple times before we learn it costs less in time and money just to make the call.

Thanks Roger

fair enough. thanks for the advice. Like I have said before, I am have decent mechanical knowledge, but very limited 928 specific knowledge. I very much appreciate all of the prompt responses I have gotten to my posts. I am bringing 2 928's back from the dead at the same time. Neither of them will ever see concourse, or any show for that matter. Nor will they ever see factory original condition. They both will be straight bodied, freshly painted, and running well before all is done. I am putting together the 80 this weekend. That includes a new fender and all new bumpers and lights.

I will give you a call in a day or so Roger.

thanks,
Dennis

I have confidence in your ability to bring these cars back from the dead. The work ahead of you seems daunting, but, I am sure, rewarding. Using the vendors here, and all of the "been there, done that" experience here will minimize the tail chasing. I look forward to your progress reports, and will help where I can.
