I dont understand this diagram, how do I know which is 1st, 2nd, 3rd, drive, etc on the transmission? can someone please explain this

If you have the cable from the selector lever in the console disconnected from the lever on the side of the trans you can move the selector on the side of the transmission by hand and select the different gear positions. Disconnect the cable from the lever on the trans and move the lever on the side of the trans all the way toward the rear. This will be the "P" position. It will be quite stiff to move by hand but it will move toward the back of the car if it isn't already in the "P" position. Next, move the lever toward the front of the car. As it moves you should feel it "click" as it moves to the next position. This is the detent roller inside the trans moving through the detent notches as the detent plate moves when the lever on the outside of the trans moves. Move the lever on the trans toward the front of the car through two "clicks". This will move the lever from the "P" position to the "R" position and finally to the "N" position. Since the cable is disconnected the shifter in the cockpit won't move. Once you have the lever on the side of the trans in the "N" position move the shifter handle in the cockpit to the "N" position. Adjust the ball connector on the end of the cable so it will go onto the ball on the selector lever on the side of the trans without any tension or slack. The selector is now properly adjusted.

i tried adjusting the selector cable, still no luck. Does anyone know where the axial holder nut is? I am trying to remove and clean governor. The picture in the publication is not to helpful

the other day i disconnected the cable to I could recheck it, i got under the car today with the shifter in N, I clicked the selecter on the trasmission twice forward and the cable seemed to short. I tried loosing the end but the end piece fell off. It is around 30 degrees outside, would the weather affect the cable this much? should I try pulling the cable tighter with pliers?
