How to use the Other Gear Options for an Automatic.

dcrasta, good review...and thanks. I experimented briefly with using the transmission manually and it does allow you to keep the engine at a little higher RPMs during acceleration. I never got close to redline....clarify what you said about redline. When you said:
"If you put the car in 2 it will stay in first gear( from a standing start ) until redline or you move the shift lever to '3'"
you didn't mean the car would shift up on its own? If it does that, I would be impressed with the engineering.
As for towing...I guess an S4 would do a good job towing but I just can't see putting a trailer hitch on it, LOL!

I have been amazed that Porsche only made something like 1/3 of the 928s standard shift. Maybe that is a testimonial to this discussion.
The automatic almost gives you the best of both worlds if you know how to use it. That said, I just believe a clutch should be standard equipment in a sports car :>)
Thanks for the really great input.

I have thought about pulling out the trans. bowden cable a fair amount and locking onto place with something like this:
At light throttle, I am curious how the trans. would behave with the cable pulled out much further than normal. Will it start in first? Will it firm up or delay the up shifts???
Reasons I haven't tried this are:
A: I don't want to flatten the wire where it won't go back inside the bowden cable "sheath".
B: Don't want to harm the transmission
C: Figured that having the trans. bowden cable pulled out and locked down would create throttle linkage issues with returning to closed position.
Thoughts?
P.S. The set screw in the picture is huge, for electrical wire. You would have to find one big enough to clear the threaded part on the bowden cable, but not this big.....or it would have to be in two pieces, like the things in the external crossovers in car speakers. They have two flat metal pieces with a screw in the center, the wire goes off to once side or the other.

General question:
When you manually downshift at speed, do you give the engine a bit more throttle to try and match the required revs to the gear ratio ?

Great tips, thanks. I think I will try that cable tightening trick...
Nice to hear about the robustness of the four speed automatic. I've been a bit afraid of hurting mine, since it was "unfixable" problems with the three speed in my '79 928 that forced me to sell her.

Although the "Mercedes" 4 speed is quite robust...like anything that is fun, there is a price to be paid for starting in 1st and then "rowing" through the gears.
Don't be surprsied when the "rebuilder" tells you the planetary has the pins pounded and a new/used planetary is required....
Gas, grass, or ***....no one rides for free.
I'll include a picture, when I can get it...photobucket won't load, right now.
