run it until it quits, then add a known amount is one way

Recently happend to me. My light failed and i thought i had more gas than was in the tank. NNNNnnnope. Driving along the fuel pressure dropped to 20psi and she started to stumble..pulled into a near by station luckily. I added 10 gallons and for fun I decided to run that tank dry also to see exactly what mileage i was getting.

12.56 mpg (125.6 miles on 10gallons) mixed hwy and some pretty heavy footed city driving. I thought i was getting around 15 or so mixed...guess not!

Light is on the list of things to do in the pod when i remove it.

When my light, and any other 928's I've dealt with, comes on there is right around 3-4 gallons left in the tank. For my car it triggers when it hits the empty hash and I only get 18.5 gallons or so in the tank.

The gauges are notoriously inaccurate due to needle sag.

Very common... My guage will only go up slightly over 3/4 tank. When the reserve light comes on I still have 4-5 gallons left in the tank. I know this because all I can squeeze in is 18 + gallons of gas. Needless to say, its a very conservative reading which is fine by me. I always start looking for a gas station when the reserve light comes on but I'm not too worried either.

So it sounds like my situation is pretty normal.

Maybe not NORMAL... but definitely very common. If its an easy fix then go for it. I figure as long as I KNOW approx how much gas is in the tank then why worry about it.

This condition can also occur with a fuel tank that has collapsed due to a clogged vent line.

Well, it is.

As the tank is a polymer plastic, a clogged vent line can cause it to collapse under vacuum.

A clogged vent line is also bad for the fuel pump and overall performance.

I have just the opposite issue. My low fuel light is on all the time in my 86.5. Any fix to that? Thanks

Is there a way to check the vent line and where is it?
