Default 928 Performance Enhancements

Just purchased an 86 928S. Would like to beef it up a bit. Don't want to get to nuts as the car only has 50,000 on it. Probably gut the cats, cold air intake and a chip. Any suggestions or reviews on the best performance chip out there for these cars??

Default Best Performance Mod You Can Make

Congrats on getting the car.

Get an X-pipe, better than gutting the cats.

No one makes a cold air intake for the 85-86, will have to fabricate your own. The stock system isn't that bad.

By far, the only chipset to get is the Porken S300s chips, completely transforms the car. www.liftbars.com

Gutting the cats will just make it sound a little "tinny". Also remember not to start it up without ALOT of ventilation with no catalyst. Cold air intake? Doesn't need it... Chips? The Porken ones mentioned above are supposed to do wonders for the car, i think you need to upgrade the FPR's to the 87+ ones though, or you could probably just get the adjustable one from 928 Specialists, considerably more money but more futureproof if you plan to add boost or other more extreme airflow mods.

Welcome and congrats on the new car. If you don't have any records showing what maintenance has been done I would make sure the car is running correctly before investing in any power adders. Cam timing, intake leaks, etc. have a significant effect on the cars overall performance.

Also, we like pictures so post 'em up if you have some.

No need to mess with the air intake... it has cold air intake already (30 years ahead of everyone else). Porken Chips Version 4.0... 87 S4 fuel pressure regulator... NGK plugs gapped to .040... It will go from "fast" to OMG FAST! The car just pulls & pulls & pulls in every gear all the way to redline... which is also raised. And, you can run it on 89 Octane with no pinging & no measurable difference in performance as compared to 91 or higher octane. Ken (Porken) has it dialed in pretty well. If you add the X pipe it'll bump up the HP / TQ even more!! Ask me how I know...?

What Ammonman said is spot on! Get her up to speed first.

When you do, get everything above. Oops, almost forgot - get the TQ rings as well. They are aluminum rings that fit inside the rubber boots on the intake plenums - 8 small ones (the large T in the center already faces up with the plenum center hole). The 8 rings basically fill the gap between the plenums for better/smoother air flow.

As said, make sure it is running like it was from the factory then go with :

X-pipe
87 Fuel Pressure Regulator. Avoid the adjustable ones as they are not needed and makes it easier to screw stuff up.
Re-time the cams
Porkens S300 chipset.

If it is an automatic be sure all the adjustments are correct for kick down and shifting. Plus never drag race from a standing start "race" from 30 mph to 120 or so better suits the gearing....and the car is quite happy over 100 mph, unlike may hotrods. And gutted cats (all $3,000 worth of them) makes a terrible rattling droning noise, the X pipe is the best option.

In reality you should just buy a 350 V8 Conversion kit. I believe a company called renegade hydrbids makes it. Performance parts are very cheap and you can also get 32V cylinder heads and stroke the 350 to a 396 or 383.

Thanks for all the feedback. Drove it home from Chicago last Thursday. 500 miles, no hiccups. Great fuel economy. My dad bought a Cayenne in NY and he did just a little better in mileage. Funny part is, his 06 has 64k, my 86 has 52k. I don't want to do to much to it, because of the originality of it. Its in absolute perfect shape. It was all a blessing in disguise. We flew into NY Tuesday morning, I had purchased an 87 S4 in Monroe, upstate. I overnighted the check Monday morning and planned on shipping the car. Dad calls mid day and said he bought one 60 miles away, so we flew up to drive them home. Drove his Cayenne from the city to Monroe, where the 928 was. OMG, what a total misrepresentation. It was pouring outside, so everything in the car was wet it leaked so bad. Battery dead, when we did get it started it was spitting and sputtering terrible. We drove it about 100 yards, throttle got stuck and almost killed us, clinking in the tranny. Piece of ****. Its back on ebay and I feel bad I cannot warn others of this fraud. (1987 s4, Monroe NY, seller Monroehandyman). Anyway, got my cashiers check in my hand and we headed home in the Cayenne. Since we had to pass thru 5 states and I had a cashiers check burning a hole in my pocket, I was on the Ipad looking. Came across this one in Periora, IL. God was taking care of me on all of it. Could have been such a costly disaster. So far I am very happy. Really wanted the 316 hp S4 though. So now Im going to bump it with some goodies.

P.S. How do I post pics?

First performance upgrade is probably the timing belt service......if it is over 6-7 years since done. You need to check and inspect all of it anyway especially cam timing.
