Default Boroscope recommendation

I want to purchase a boroscope. Looking for advice on what to get. 6mm/7.8mm/10mm?

Let me know what you use. Thanks!

I don't have anything specific since my own search is on and off as technology changes, but the direction I am going in is a lighted camera with some kind of USB or wireless interface to a tablet. Search for usb borescope or endoscope to see what I mean. Prices start around $30 and for common units go up to about $300 with the more expensive including some kind of screen.

Results I've seen so far though don't make that look all that useful for inspecting a 928 bore due to light and angles of the camera.

I bought a cheapo at Harbor Freight ... the tip is about a quarter-inch. Haven't seen a good to compare, but I can tell you every time I've needed it, it came in very handy!

I also have the HF model. The cheapest has a camera head too big to go into a cylinder head. The step up, about $185, has a 3.5" screen, is rechargeable, and has a very small camera head. Sounds like Tom has the same one. There have been a couple of reports of the mirror falling off in the cylinder, so be gentle if you use it that way. I don't normally buy the extended warranty but did on this camera. It works very well and you'll find many uses for it. Easy to snap a photo to the SD card or take video. Only downside to the smaller head is the LEDs are tiny so less light. If you search my posts, you'll see a post about a lost washer with sample pics.

I picked one up on Ebay, 7mm head illuminated with 4 LEDs. No recording capability, 3" or 3.5" screen, about 2' of reach. About a hundred bucks. Fits through spark plug whole just fine, but the camera body at the end is long enough that it is difficult to flex and look around the entire bore/cylinder. To get a good view of piston have to make sure it is at bottom of its travel. I ended up using at night to get the best view on the screen- but I don't have indoor workspace at present either. It gave about as much insight as it was worth, but not optimal.

Got above in mail today. Anyone have software for it easily available? Package had empty CD in it. Might take a while to get if from seller.

Hi Erkka-

Try this file- You'll have to change the file extension back to .exe. If it doesn't work shoot me an e-mail and I'll send it that way.

FWIW, I bought the same $16 endoscope, it does pretty good video capture. The camera head is 10mm in diameter, 50 mm long. Here's a video of cylinder #5 on my GTS. Click on the 'gear' icon in the player and switch to 480p. Takes a sec for it to 'adjust' once in the cylinder but you can see the finish on the Nikasil pretty clearly. I'm happy for $16.

Costco has a nice one $150.00 IIRC. Small enough to fit in a spark plug hole and comes with a small monitor and 3' extension.

If i get time Im going to look today..thanks!

Also...anyone know if it is possible to use one to view the top of the fuel tank in order to see if the vent line is intact that connects the two "lobes" of the tank for fueling?
Im just not sure what access there is.

Sure would be nice not to drop the tank to look.

Edwards showed me this. Amazing. And it plugs right into your computer.

Its impressive how closely that scope can get to items, and remain in focus...and all for just $16. Only feature missing is control of the head angle...a la endoscope...but those don't cost $16.

Any idea if the software will work with a Mac

Thank you Rob. Got RsCap 1.08 from it. I'll try it on laptop later. Much better service than eBay seller.

I bought maybe year ago another slightly larger version which doesn't fit through plug hole. It has small mirror which might work together with this one. Adjusting it to correct angle it should be possible to see valves etc.

If you have the piston at BDC I imagine that one could loop the head on its cable and tape it so you could get it into the cylinder, retroflexed, so you could see valves. Not sure I'm brave enough to try this, though...
