The upper arm has a pair of replaceable bushings where it bolts to the body.
Those are removed with a small press.
Out near the rotor, there is an upper ball joint w/rubber boot.
Do you mean the ball joint?
A picture could help.

Whatever you're replacing requires the upper arm to come out of the car first.

If he's replacing the ball joint with Carl's ball joint rebuilding kit, it can be done with the A-Arm in the car. Replacing the bushings on the pivot arm does require the arm to be removed.

I rebuilt the upper ball joint using Carl's kit, it if for 78-86 model years. Here is link to the instructions he includes with the kit - ftp://928m:928m@12.234.229.133/insta...ointrepair.pdf

Glen, did you need to source a boot other than what Carl supplies?

Its been a few years, but the kit he sold me had unusable boots.

Yes, I used the Audi boots, the ones with the kit were not usable.
