Guys, Correct me if I'm wrong, but dont you adjust the shifter in 4th gear? The coupler kept pulling off the connector in 5th gear. If not, would Colin please provide a step-by-step tutorial on how to adjust the coupler so I and the OP may adjust our shifters correctly?

Thanks!

When I installed mine a couple years ago I used Roger's impregnated bronze bushings in the coupler. I laso made th e hole for the rear most mounting screw a little elongated and used this "Play" area to adjust my shifter to get the right placement. Once I got everything line up I used locktite and torque to set the mounting screws in place.

Three summers and it still feels like the hurst shifter I had in an old Ford TopLoader. Accurate as hell with a snick into place for each shift. As for getting the shifter **** in place, mine was already split so I'm not sure what I'd use, maybe KY?

Take out the shift lever. Place it on a hard surface bottom end down / shift handle up. Spit in the handle or use your favorite water-based lube. Push downonto the shift lever while alternating your weight left to right... it SHOULD go on. You may also cover the top of the shift boot with a doubled-up towel or pad and drive it down with a hammer. Take care not to hit it tooo hard.

Default Lizard Shifter

Hugo...I ordered and received mine also. Did you get rear bushings in your SS kit.
I lost reverse and 1st. I put the car on a lift slid the boot down on the rear coupler and much to my surprise.....NO bushing on driver side and the one on the passenger side looked like a beaver was chewing on it.
I used the delrin bushings supplied by Roger........ and "BINGO"
Install the passenger side with rubber mallet, get the driver side hand started and than use a "C" clamp and squeeze them in....put the clamp on each bushing and start screwing....
Shifts like new.
I will do the short shifter install after the first snowfall!
Please pm if you need any help

Karl,

What I need is your lift!

My motivation for working on the car on weeknights is pretty low. I hope to find time this weekend to jack it up onto stands and poke around.

Am I understanding correctly that you installed the bushings without removing the coupler at all? ANd that no further adjustment was needed to get 1st and reverse?

Yes. Another member did the same but he said " with difficulty"
Using the c clamp was so easy to install new bushings.
The toughest part of the job was moving the rubber boot!
I should have taken pics but I am new to this and I wasn't thinking .
I had no bushing on the driver side and maybe 3/4 on the pass side. The car shifts like new!

I did the Lizard shifter with a new rear coupler (standard bushings) installed with the center console in place, easy to do. Make sure when you go to drill the holes that you will reach all of the gears. If its to far to the right/left you won't be able to twist enough to get one side or the other. Or Elongate the holes (Stated previous to me) to insure you can adjust.

That's the best news. I put new rear coupler bushings in yesterday so that part is done. Now with this good news I can go ahead and install the SS Lizard. Your wheel/tire combo looks great. Can you tell me the wheel size and what is involved in replacing my stock wheels/tires. Do I need to know a certain backspacing # and will I need a certain spacer or no spacer. Can you get me up to speed on tire wheel
combo's. This is my "first rodeo" with a Porsche.
your ride looks really nice

Assuming you're talking to me? KarlM?

Not sure if its the same on the '85 as i think they have stock through hole spacers on the rear, correct? The wheels i have are 8" and 11" with not the best offsets fo 928's (came from a 996 C4S). @95 fit on the rear with fender rolling and no spacer then the 245 on the front fit fine (I use a 3mm spacer in front so the center cap fits)

Thanks, any suggestions on where to buy? Are they Porsche wheels?
