Corrugated hose, drivers side behind bumper next to brake intake?
I'm replacing the front air dam on my '85 and found a chewed up piece of corrugated fabric hose stuffed up under the bumper, looks like mice ate it. I have no idea what this hose does, any clues?

Well, it might be the duct for the alternator, that loops behind the left headlight where it also carries a temp sensor for HVAC.

The hose should run from the spout on the alternator cowl forward to the area where you found it, then turn up into the area between the front duct and the fender liner just in front of the wheel. It should be attached to the forward side of the fender liner, going straight up, then doing a U-turn and going straight back down to an open end. There will be a short metal section in the hose in the section on the fender liner. In that metal section will be a thermistor (temp sensor) that sends the incoming air temp to the HVAC temp control system.
It is common for the wires to the temp sensor to be in bad shape. If the sensor doesn't work, the temp control system won't work properly. Worth getting the hose fixed (cooler alternator works better) as well as the temp sensor.

Thanks all, this solves a mystery that's plagued me for nearly 30 years. I'm the 2nd owner of the car, it had 20K on it when I bought it used through a dealer. The alternator died within a year and the duct wasn't connected to it when I replaced it. I figured the plastic intake was some kind of air scoop, never knew there was supposed to be a hose on it.
The replacement alternator only lasted 20K more, I'm now on my third alternator. This explains a lot.
Thanks again,
Scott.

Should finish up like this below;Roger T has replacement hose. End is normally clamped the to LHF Front splash shield, but I think mounting as pictured works better.

Kal, I've actually spent more time under this car in the past thirty years than I have in the driver's seat. The car has 72K miles on it now, it had a bit over 20K on it when I bought it.

The only reason I agreed to help with Dan Hebert's car was the chance to take pictures of things I hadn't worked on before. Like starting reassembly from a completely bare interior the entire interior. And a more or less bare front clip.
My 'Hebert' folder has 2388 pictures in it. Stay tuned.
