In our showrooms, I'd say it's about a 50-50 split as to shoppers who have owned a Porsche before. The 4 doors attract buyers from other brands who have never owned but admire Porsche. For sure a good percentage of my Panamera sales are first time Porsche owners.

I am fortunate enough to have some really cool cars: the red 79 930, the silver 87 sc'ed 928, a yellow 66 chevelle and a couple others. They all garner looks, waves, thumbs up, and smiles from all walks of life every time I drive them. With that said, I have to say that the reaction to my black Panamera GTS is even more frequent and filled with awe. People are absolutely all over the car when I'm parked. They break cameras out, take tons of pictures, mutter to themselves, all while smiling and giggling a bit. It's pretty cool I must admit.
And yes, I wave or bright flash all oncoming P-cars when I'm driving one. Always. Just depends on the person, right Abby?

Abby what % are leasing ? I think many are just in a "rental" car more concerned with how they look driving in it rather than how it drives, besides they do not intend to keep it beyond the lease.

A lot of Cayenne drivers also own (or owned) a 928, so one can't throw a blanket over everyone
I suspect the same may be true for Panamera drivers. Regardless of whether drivers of newer models wave or not, they acquired their ride to be part of the Porsche family. You don't own a Porsche by default. It's a choice!

Here in Wyoming you're never going to see a Panamera unless it's on the interstate just passing through. I've never seen one. Porsche owners, 911 and all others do flash. I'm pretty much of a lone wolf here in Laramie, never seeing another 928 other than one time when an incredibly ratty 928 (obviously someone who had no interest in what he was driving) drove through town. Never saw it again.
In Wyoming, people buy mostly american iron. Pickups are incredibly popular (for good reason). When we go back east to see our kids and grandkids, we are amazed at how few american cars are out there. Given the snobishness of the New England area, I suppose it would be bad taste to drive an american vehicle. This is particularly true in the Boston region. Don't mean to insult east coast folks.

Wow, generalize much?
I doubt snobbishness has anything to do with it. I'd say it's more like open mindedness. Rather than limiting themselves to only "American" brands, they feel free to choose from the full menu of choices.
From another perspective...
there's a reason GM was going down the tubes and it wasn't because they built mostly SUV's. It's because they started building inferior quality products starting in the early 70's. Many people got burned and vowed never to buy a GM car again. Same with Chrysler. Less so with Ford. Things are changing for the better in recent years and that's a fine thing. But many people are still reticent to take a chance on US brand cars.

The Panamera is said to be the best sport luxury sedan available now and it looks great from all angles but one. The rear quarter angle. It has a wierd hump back shape that most, myself included, can't find appealing. It appears that there may be a solution on the horizon and it's a (que scary music ) Station Wagon. Seriously, take a look. I really like this look on the Panamera. What do you think?
