Cool C&D article with 1982 American GT cars (Camero, Mustang, Trans-Am) with a 928 as the benchmark.

Gosh, I wonder who will win?

Takes me back to Mustangs and Camaros of my youth and wondering what about a Porsche could be worth so much more money ...

I dated a woman around 1980, who really loved the Z78. It was a barge with nothing going for it, but in black-and-gold livery it looked way cool. Good secretary's car, kind of the way the original '64 Mustang with a 200-inch six cylinder was. The Camaro did nothing well except scarf gas and oil at a phenominal rate. Whatever performance that Chevrolet had built the Z28 heritage upon was completely nulled out by the dozenth model year.

I had a '76 SC in the garage, a small collection of Lotii in my toy shop, with a Saab 900 Turbo as a dd. She -really- wanted the Camaro. I should have read those signs earlier than I did, and saved some time, expense, and aggravation. No regrets at all when I gave her the Camaro as a parting gift.

I thought I had seen all the articles, but this was new to me. Great read, bringing back memories. I rode a lot in the Z28 and ordered my own 86 Mustang GT from the factory. I also experienced the 928 for the first time in 82. The difference between pony cars and the 928 was like night and day even at those lower hp levels.

Quotes ---

"in our collective opinion, it is nearer perfection than any other GT ever built."

"most of us are avowed 928 automatic fans"

"the 928 has a very distinct edge you won't find in the test results. It feels much better through the steering.."

That first line is still true. I would like a car mag to do the scientific testing now on a 928 like my euro, after fitted with the widest, stickiest tires that will fit, shock/spring package like the white gt in SoCal, and F50 or aftermarket ceramic brakes fitted. That would be cool to see.

Thanks for posting.

Back to that quote...

“Five nicely spaced transmission ratios help keep the under hood spirit alive but, here you find the 928’s Achilles heel. The 928’s shift linkage generated widespread bad reviews to the extent that most of us are avowed 928 automatic fans”

I didn’t know ROG was a C/D tester in 1982 (that guy in the center pic sure looks like ROGer?)
