New member from Torrington CT!
Hi everyone!
I posted a topic a few months ago about a 1984 928 that I had been looking at buying with a nasty rattle. Got a ton of helpful responses, ended up buying the car a little over a month ago and figured it was time to become a member here and update everyone on the progress!
I bought the car pretty confident that the rattle was timing belt related. I drove it home and immediately put it up on jackstands to tear it apart. Tore it down and the belt was so slack that you could flip it over on the passenger side cam gear. Surprisingly both timing marks still lined up at TDC. Turns out that the tensioner set screw was set to the loosest possible setting (it didnt just back out as the lock nut was tight).
In the 5-6 weeks that I've had it, I replaced the timing belt, put in a new Laso water pump (plastic impeller), replaced the typical wear parts of the tensioner, new engine bay fuel lines including the lines from the rail to the injectors, new fuel filter, new battery, Mobil 1 synthetic 15W-50, checked and released flexplate tension and some other little stuff.
Fired it up after the work and lo and behold! Silent! Since then I've put about 350 uneventful, awesome miles on it. The car is such a joy to drive. Solid, no rattles, tracks perfectly straight, brakes evenly and well.
It leaks a little oil (I think from the pan) but it hasnt been reflected in the dipstick at all. It also has a bit of a tranny fluid leak which appears to be from the pan gasket. I have that and will be replacing it soon. But for right now, Im just closely monitoring the fluid levels and enoying driving it!! I'll also have to tend to a little bit of peeling paint at the door bottoms soon, but the rest of the paint after a clay barring and waxing looks great!
This was my long winded way of saying hello!

Also, I was driving around Torrington CT today and saw a 928 in a driveway. Drove by the house and there was another one in the garage! I figured the owner must be on here.

I was talking to a guy I met recently who has several 928s of his own, believe he lives in Torrington also, maybe those were his cars that you saw. He mentioned there was a red 928 for sale somewhere near him that he wished he had bought, possibly yours? If so that's just too funny. I don't know if he is a RL member but I will ask him next time I see him. Nice car BTW, looks really nice without the door moldings.

Just by way of comenting on your home town, I lived in New Hartford and bought my S4 new in '87. You may have seen it during the remaining ten years we lived there; dark blue S4 with a few ski area stickers on the rear window. Moved out here to Wyoming in '97 and would never move back; good roads, open spacers; this is 928 country.

Opelotus- That is funny. My car was for sale about 30 seconds up the road from the guy I mentioned. It must be the same guy!
BJBPE- I might have seen your car, but I still would've been pretty young in 1997. I'll have to check out those Montana roads for myself someday. Always have wanted to get out there.

Welcome to "the 928 madness" and this shark tank: yours is a very nice colour combo, please post some more pictures also from the interior when you can.
I continue to be always amazed how good the factory paint looks when some TLC is given to it, as you did - well done!

Welcome! I'm partial to 84s with no rub strips
Mine had some seepage from the oil pan when I got it. A little careful snugging with a 10mm wrench cured it for the most part. I find I need to go in every 6 months or so and re snug them... The lock washers don't seem to be doing their job...
