Coolest Auto I have ever owned. I never though I would like it but with the bowden cable and modulator adjusted and the vacuum system working correctly the auto almost reads your mind.. Cant really downshift to first without a mod (basically bridge the kickdown relay controller but thats easy enough) however that could be a bit overkill (how many real first gear corners do you really have to burn through? )
Auto is not a reason not to grab a 928 if its in good condition.

I appreciate the "Roger Box" in the later 928's in a way I have in no other. Before buying my first 928 I looked at and test drove a number of 5spd cars. I was unimpressed. For a super car the 928 5spd reminded me of a 1970's era Corvette. At the time I owned a 1966 Sunbeam Tiger with a perfect Ford Top Loader 4 speed transmission. That transmission was an order of magnitude more precise than any of the 928 5spds I drove (five or six 1988-1994). One of them was at Doc Brown's shop, a 1991 GT, that had just received a new clutch, so I think a pretty good representation.
I warmed to the idea of the auto grudgingly. I held a general disdain for the concept of a "GT" super car with and automatic transmission. Doc Brown got me thinking about a car with an automatic after letting me test drive one of the cars in his shop. Other than the 2nd gear start, I was amazed at how competent the auto was. It seemed to ever be in the right gear regardless of the driving condition. The broad torque band on these cars help in this regard.
So the advantages of the auto over the 5spd, for me, are significant, the auto is a better choice for me. The conditions in which I drive my cars are moderate at best, I don't visit the track, but I do enjoy the twisty roads in the nearby mountains.
So try to leave any bias you have about driving a GT with an automatic when test driving these cars. in either option the 5spd and the "Roger Box" are more than competent.

If you have a 996tt, then I don't see how a 928 will even be useful. If you've driven a 997 even, then the 928 will feel like a donky kart. There is no comparison. The auto sucks and is super sloppy or when tightened still a let down. The 5 speed is like a stick through rocks when cold or too hot.
We love these cars, ( i have had 10) but some rational thought would be well placed in this thread.

Since I dislike automatics in any car having one in a "sports car" is beyond my comprehension. Besides it gives your left leg something to do and yes you have to put the coffee down to shift gears.
With a manual on track near the limit in a corner you can rotate the car with more gas or less gas with a degree of control simply not possible in an auto no matter how much you stir the shifter. And automatics when they shift still sound much like a city bus as it slides into the next gear.
There is joy in doing a proper heal toe RPM blip and dropping it seamlessly into a lower gear braking hard into a tight corner the rearend rotates a bit from engine braking then adding a touch of power oversteer as you drift slighty across the track......yea try that with an auto

I've got a variety of cars (7!) and each serves a purpose or has a desirable appeal.
I just got back from a great track weekend in my 944. It's 13 seconds slower than the 928 but a lot of fun in its own right. One difference, I have better lap times in my 928 than the 996tt out there. (997 S, etc!) "Really?" Those guys are afraid to corner their cars and I drive the 928 at its limit.

Wow, Brendan, tell us what you really think!

Have you ever track driven a 928 (with auto-trans?) It's not the school-bus you think it is. ?

2) "And automatics when they shift still sound much like a city bus as it slides into the next gear." Then something is wrong, 928's dont do that.
IMHO, I have 5spd at home, and this is my autobox. I dont enjoy watching the timely threads on people with 5spd problems down for long periods looking for very expensive bits to fix em.
My choice was on the maintenance of the drivetrain to get an auto...I have a track car, an RX8. The 928 is just tooooooo far away from serious track duty, in street shape. So that was my choice.
