Default 5 speed vs auto

i had a 928 with the 5 speed and really liked it, i have never driven the auto version. how good is the auto in this car, does is kill the "fun" factor once one has owned/driven the 5 speed.

thanks

the auto is quite good......by far the stronger transmission!!!!! Its a mercedes unit that are well known being quite strong.

I have raced 928 5 speeds and a 928 automatic...the automatic had precisely ZERO issues in over 90 hours (you read that correctly) on track....not a single hiccup....my 5 speed barely works, is difficult to shift gears and my 1st racer with the "better" synchro transmission blew the clutch in 6 hours on track...

Subjective and there is a thread recently about this. I think the clutch is so easy in a 928 and the gearbox, when shortened, is a treat. That said for traffic here in New York, I like the Auto. It is not as sporty but it is not a drag when it's working right. Definitely still fun thanks to all that torque!

with that being said does the auto hold the power of a super charger kit without issues?

If you like the crispness of a manual transmission then you may find it sluggish. Gotta drive a few and see. Looking for a cruiser or a sports car?

Well according to Victor25 who sells a supercharger, he feels the auto is far better suited for a supercharger than the manual in terms of power and torque handling. There will be many who disagree.

i ask this because i had a '92 911 with auto and hated it. i had a '08 997tt with auto and liked it a lot. i do not like a slow shifting and sluggish gearbox. all of my other porsches have been manuals except for my CTT which again is auto but i enjoy driving it as well

It's true that the auto boxes handle more torque. The autos I've driven all seemed sluggish...because they were old, original boxes. Maybe a rebuilt auto is the ticket.

For me the 5 speed feels very nice supercharged. I have never driven an auto 928 but I am sure they are nice from what I have heard. The 928 manual does have a longer shift pattern but it almost feels natural for the car that it was meant to be. The 928 was basically designed to be a Lear Jet for the ground and that is what it feels like. Afterall, would you want the piliot jamming at the controls at takeoff? I don't think so. The rides I have given so far with my SC installed have all said the same thing. Smooth!

Since I have done the intake refresh, Porken chips, x-pipe with fast flow cats AND adjusted the bowden cable correctly I like the auto. I drive it like a manual from 1st through to 4th if I want it a bit quicker but just leave it in drive for cruising.

I drive mine to work some days, about 1 hour, in stop start traffic so auto is more comfortable.

From what I understand the Auto will handle more power.
More power = More Fun
But I have gone for a ride in a strong manual shift car and it was crazy.
My car is an auto and there is a video in my signature.

A good ??? is what do you want the car to do? Street car, race car.....some combo of both or just a cruiser..... Without a doubt the auto is stronger and can take more power for longer than the 5 speeds.....many guys run high HP boosted engines in ORR for years on end with minimal trans issues...guys with similar HP on track snap 5 speeds on a regular basis....

I dont think anyone has BROKEN an auto on HP. Have they?

Torque tube shaft...entirely different story..that you need to size for HP use properly..if you can.

Having owned both, I can say for me at least the manual is the more enjoyable choice.

Like others have said, the auto seems to be the stronger choice by far as far as power handling is concerned. But, I've got a point an squirt auto box in another powerful vehicle and it's just not the same for me. I like being involved in "driving" the car.

I'm very much looking forward to supercharging my 5-speed. It'll be a whole different animal.
