infant seat in back
It may be that I might have to use my 928 to carry my kid. I'm looking for a vehicle with a "proper" back seat, but until then, I may be stuck using the Porsche. Now, the seat I have actually does fit quite nicely in the back seat, but my problem is the seat belt will not stay tight when I buckle the seat in. Is this just the way they were designed then? It would be great if I have the flexibility to use this car on occasion--at least until the "required" child seat is so massive I'd need a full-size SUV just for it.

Are you talking about a rear facing seat or a forward? In any case, there are belt tensioners out there that will lock the belt into the tight position. I believe that you dont have 3 point belts in your model year either so it would be a good idea to anchor the seat as well.
One of the reasons I bought my 928 is because I'm able to carry my son comfortably in the back seat using a Radian 75 seat which fits perfectly. No need for another car IMO especially with only 1 child. We took a trip to Oregon and we even loaded a portable crib in the car. The amount of space and versatility of a 928 its hard to beat and I have yet to find a good reason to purchase another vehicle.

It may be your belt. We used the seat in the back a couple times, and I don't remember having any problems keeping the seat belt tight.
Since you don't have an airbag, you can use the front seat. This worked quite well for me. and my daughter loved it.

The child seat that Danny refers to is NLA/discontinued.
This is because sunshine kids was taken over by Diono.
The seat that you want to buy is the Diono RadianR100.
I have two of them which fit perfectly into the back seat. HOWEVER, the seatbelts on the 928 sit out very far and dont hold the seat very securely.
I found that it was much better to put the belt through the rear facing hole, then I used a ratchet strap bolted to the cargo hold down to pull the front of the seat down. This still allows the top of the seat to rotate forward. So I use their rear attachment point to the rear cargo attachment point. Unfortunately this is not the best solution as the rear attachment strap is positioned SO LOW that it goes up and over the seat creating a pivot point lifting the rear of the seat. This was my ONLY complaint about these seats. This strap should be done from the top, not the middle. Also the pinch/holder for this belt is held so close that you cannot even loop it down under and through the folding part of the seat for a more downward pull.
This setup though does leave the seat so that it really cannot move. I have reefed on the seat, putting shocks of around 200lbs on it, and none of the pieces really flexed or moved. As well, I tested it with hard cornering and the seats dont roll to the side, even with the children in them, which cannot be said for when they are in the front seat

I am referring to rear-facing. My year doesn't have the 3-point seat belts but the belts do basically match up to the slots on the seat I already have (Thanks for the suggestions on the seat, I will eventually need the bigger kind), they just don't latch. So it appears something is broken? I haven't tested on the other rear seat (I have the driver's seat too far back for it to fit there) to compare.
I could put it in the passenger seat, I just wanted to see what I can do to make the rear seat work.
There is some sort of tie down on the floor in front of the back seat. I have a couple different brands of the base/carrier type of seat, so I'll experiment.
Thanks!

I have also been told that the rear seat parts come out fairly easily, and its easier to get an infant seat in there when the seat pad itself is removed. I have yet to try it.
I think if I was to do it I'd just put the giant nascar 5 pt harness rear facing carseat I have in the front and tell the law it just won't fit in the back. There are no airbags in this car and since the backseats are so useless it should be considered a 2 passenger car.

The seat cushion just lifts out in mine. Its also easy to fit lap/sash belts - all the threaded holes will be there in an 84 , as they were in my 83. Problem we have in Oz is that kids under 8 are not allowed in a front seat AFAIK.

I found a Recaro seat that fit pretty well in the back of my 928 for my grandson. He was 2 at the time, about 25lbs. Now he is 5 and I am using just a booster. I would prefer a sholder belt but I drive so carefully when he is in the car, I HOPE, there is no way anyone is going to get through the net. He loves the car. We are from NC so he calls it a "shawk".
Good luck,

You may be a victim of evolving safety standards. I had twin daughters 11 years ago and my 928 was my only daily driver until about 2 years ago. When they were born I could move the passenger seat all the way forward and put one Graco SnugRide (without the base) in the rear passenger and one in the front passenger seat. No air-bags on the '84 928 so front seat was not an issue. I checked on line and it looks like the snug-ride is still available.
However, the newest manuals on the SnugRide says do not use them with belts that have emergency locking retractors (which is just about every car there is). I don't think this was in their manual 11 years ago. There is a locking clip you can use for ELR seatbelts but it requires a 3-point seat belt not a lap belt. The only option you might have (if you want to be fully compliant) is to retrofit the rear seats with 3-point shoulder belts combined with the locking clip. You can probably buy all the hardware from 928INTL to do the install if needed. The early 928s still have the 3rd belt mounting point under the trim on the C-pillar since it was required in developed countries. Optionally you could probably swap out the ELR lap belt from one that adjusts manually.
