I ran Castrol GTX for a while with 4 bottles of ZDDP MAX, no complaints.
However the car feels better with valvoline VR1 Racing and 4 bottles of ZDDP MAX :P Won't go back to Castrol :P

I've been running Royal Purple HPS in my cars for years, with zero problems, no leaks, doesn't use any between changes either. That is both 928's, the Pantera, and Dee's Tahoe.
My other cars are filled with Valvoline 20/50 high milage, and are changed every 3K. My old Harleys use Valvoline 60 W racing, and every Harley made since 1936 has roller lifters. Zink isn't an issue.

1. 20/50 Kendall (non-synthetic) (used to be common in Florida.) Continue to use the Torco oil additive.
2. 15/50 Mobil 1 (synthetic) and continue to use the Torco oil additve.
3. 20-50 Torco TR-1 non-synthetic and no additive. (My personal favorite.)
4. 20-50 Torco SR-1 synthetic and no additive.
5. Brad Penn 20-50 and no additive.
DO NOT use 10/30. These engines were not built with these thin oils, in mind!

Greg,
Which one of the additives would I use with Castrol GTX 20W50 oil?

I'm guessing Greg will say "just switch to Torco TR-1" and be happy...
It is easiest to go with whats known to work...
There are few oils that seem to have solid usage records across many users on rennlist at 20W50 weight with Zinc:
Amsoil/Royal Purple/Swepco/Torco - purely in aphabetical order (maybe a few more)
Seems for a road car you can find good oils from all these brands. And indeed lots of reports of oil pressure problems solved by switching to these from lighter oils...

Thanks Alan,
I just changed the oil with Castrol and then read all the threads about ZDDP. Just want to get to the next oil change interval and then will switch to Torco brand, soooo in the meantime need to add something.
There are no Torco dealers or distributors in the vicinity.

Hilton,
Yes that would be the easiest way, however, the additive or the oil is not available locally. I would have to get it shipped, so the time for recieving it would be the same.
The additive could be added right away, while the oil change would have to wait for a time that i can get to do it. This is my daily driver.

I went from 5-40 to 20-50 and now back to 5-40....reason is during winter month, car starts much easier.
Yes, thinner oil does give you lower oil pressure while idle in hot climate but i thought it is ok cause while idling, there is no stress? About all these zddp, zinc, additives...i am still listening....

From what information I have, your cams and lifters would not be happy with you, right now.
Probably easier to find "Brad Penn" on the east coast, BTW.

Ordered the ZEP from amazon. Should be delivered next week. Had to order a 12 pack so anybody in the vicinity needs some I can sell you some.
So it looks like 1-1/2 bottles per the 8 quarts in our cars. Am I correct?

no one has more race miles without failure than i do.
I use Amsoil 15-15. compared to mobil 1 in race conditions, its night and day. (full disclosure..... oil pressure fell apart with the mobil 1 to half that of Amsoil when temps were over 220 for the oil)
other than that, i have no data other than race engine life over the past 13 years of racing . Before that, Redline 15-50.
Amsoil has the zinc you need in a race oil, but not the detergents. there is a street version but i dont know much about it. its a 20-50 weight.
do NOT use thiner weight oils.
Anderson had good luck with Kendall 20-50 non synthetic for years too.. only thing there, is that you need to change it more often. synthetics keep their viscosity better over their use life vs non synthetics. almost double or more in a race use.
