is there such a thing? officially titled: 928 S4/GT? just saw this on ebay this morning:

Holy cow Erkka, with all that going on during the transition (S4 to GT), no wonder there's confusion, esp "In '89 they were more like S4 with GT package or something from cars papers point of view"

That ebay car is not a GT I don't think. They are referring to the 928 being a GT (Grand Touring) car. People selling 928s often refer to them as being a GT (even 79 OB cars). It's confusing, but lots of people are confused about the 928.
The GT designated models all had the close ratio 5 speed transaxels I do believe.

This (S4/GT) designation appears on Ebay and autotrader all the time. Maybe it originated from Porsche and Bilal's example. I think some state DMVs picked up this designation and their computers show '89 to 91 as "S4/GT"; so the confusion continues with A/T S4s being called GTs. Try and explain to some dealer who lists the car that it can't be a GT if it has an A/T.

Went over to Dave's tonight. Drained the oil, removed the oil filter, cut it open. It was old and nasty, but no metal. It must have been a fluke.
I definitely noticed metal on the dipstick during the first inspection...(some small but substantial flakes)
The drain plug had the normal fine wear metal. No chunks, no sign of big metal.
The element in the oil filter has no metal whatsoever... So weird. I have been imagining large deposits of metal in there since the first time I looked at the car.
The car still needs a TB replacement and Fuel lines, but it's now got a much better prognosis than before. Dave is going to get her into Precision Motor Werks ASAP. What a beautiful car.....

Dave, Welcome!! I've been following this thread, what a fun turn the story took!
Mike,
This is weird. Bearing debris wouldn't stick to the magnet but it would certainly be in the filter. The only possibility is that the filter was completely clogged and getting bypassed-- which is quite possible if the filter was really nasty. But that would also mean that the problem-- whatever it is-- is recent.
Did you save the oil? It might be worth running it through a coffee filter or something like that, to see what's in there.

I'll contact Dave and have him pour the oil through a filter. Hope he hasn't recycled it yet...
It certainly could have been bypassed. That filter was VERY OLD. It was also the incorrect short length profile filter.
I got plenty of oil on my hands when I pulled the filter, and it didn't seem gritty at all. Didn't notice any particles at all.
