MEK IS nasty stuff. Don't know about its carcinogenic properties, but any drop of it that touches your skin will go right through the surface and kill that spot. Be very careful working with it.

MEK (Methyl Ethyl Ketone) is the specific solvent for ABS plastic, is present in the glue for that material, and is used neat as a cleaner prior to gluing ABS. It is also the solvent (with a red dye in it) commonly used by plumbers when cleaning PVC pipe prior to gluing, and is sold in cans by the pallet load from plumbing supplies for that purpose. I've used it for decades using normal safety gear for all sorts of plastic fabrication.
Vapours are obviously to be avoided, as is skin exposure, and it is highly flammable.
SQL Guy .... with respect ... you must be thinking of some other substance ... it doesn't "go right through the surface and kill that spot".
The pump has plastic terminal components, and so I wouldn't immerse it in MEK as those plastic parts will get damaged.
