+1 on Dwayne. I used his as a guide when i pulled my engine and did all the work. Rob Edwards is your source for what an engine is supposed to look like when new. His basically is.

Hey puppy, you got off better than I did with my 88s4 'Steal'. It was my favorite car ever and I have had 5 928s now. Mine just caught fire and burned right in my garage just 5 minutes after I got her running perfectlly. Pay close attention to those fuel lines once you get into the engine. I then bought my 86.5 with the same issue you are having now. I rebuilt the engine. Not too bad and had a ton of fun. I am in NC and if I can help in any way, pm me and I will send you my phone number. If you are a pretty good wrench you can do 95% alone. I needed help getting the new engine in the car. That was to help guide it between the motor mounts. I then made another stupid mistake by hooking up the battery charger to the battery in startup mode. That messed up the ECU. So, you are pre-warned about that one. It was middle of the night, I had worked on it all day and wanted to hear it run. soooo... I heard it run 3 weeks later. Now I love it almost as much as my 88.
Good luck,
Good luck,

Now that you have a manual, its time to dig in

Pull the timing belt system apart and check it all out.
My first goal in your shoes would be to put in a replacement water pump (any pump where the pulley turns), string a new belt, and then use the starter to run a compression test on each cylinder.
That will give you the information you need to decide what to do next.. before you end up with parts bills totalling more than the cost of a replacement S4 engine

Leakdown test is much more accurate than a compression test and you don't need to spin the engine. I think that S4you guys had there was an extremely lucky owner. As far as I know, All 32Vs will bend the valves, pretty much all the time the belt let's go.

edit: removed wrong info on 87 being non-interference - the car I thought survived belt failure compression-tested ok, and ran ok. Leakdown however a couple of months later showed bent valves

all 32 valve engines are interference engines.
It is possible the tension light was not triggered as the belt did not break. If it just lost teeth becuase of a froze water pump then the tension would remain correct or within limits. It happened on my car without the pump freezing - just a very old belt.
Not to scare you but there could be worse problems than a bad pump and bent valves. The impeller could have come off and ground into the block.
