The fuel lines and air intake were redone by the previous owner (well his Porsche mechanic). The belt doesn't appear to be sheared but I guess it's time to disassemble...hopefully its just a water pump.

Yes, if I understand what you are describing, sounds as if the water pump failed, allowing coolant to escape into the belt cover area and then out thru the cover vents into the intake tubes and out the front. At that point, the damage was just the water pump and the engine would still run.

Then the failed pump allowed the timing belt to lose tension, and you started losing teeth at the crank gear. At that point, you lost cam timing, and you now have a failed water pump and bent valves at a minimum. An expensive repair. If you have it repaired at a shop, the cost will come close to totaling the car. If you do the repairs yourself, you are looking at a couple of thousand and a few weeks of work...

I hope that the problem is less, but that is what it looks like to me at this point. Start a list of what folks recommend that you do, gather all of the suggestions, and decide what you will do.

To Mickster, I am in Nashville area. I prefer to do the work myself unless I can get an amazing deal. Car has 113,000 miles and routine service has been done.

I thought you guys were just trying to scare the new guy. But from the details it sure sounds like a frozen water pump. He needs one of those pumps that can freeze and not strip the pump.

Good luck with this one. I do have a spare S4 engine.

Oh one quick way of checking for which valves are bent can be done with the valve covers off. Place the crank in the safe 45 degree position. Turn the cam until it is in the valve closed position. Slip a feeler gauge under the lobe. If the lifter moves down a little the valve is good. If there is free space under the lifter then the valve is bent.

half full is the right level, not full.

Did the timing belt warning light EVER came on the dash (symbol looks like a small and a large sprocket cooncted with a chain)?

I like your attitude Puppy. That is the same I took with the blown head gasket. Just dive in and play. It really is fun when you get the engine out and tear into it.

I would carefully double-check the belt movement thru the vent holes first. If the belt is not moving, and you have spun the engine on the starter numerous times, you have done all of the damage already. If the belt actually is moving, you need to do more checking.

It sounds bad right now, but it never hurts to be sure before you start ripping it apart...

Absolutely no belt movement. Oh well, it will be a learning experience and if i brake it, there are other engines out there. But seriously i don't think this could be anywhere as bad as working on a Boxster without a lift. And everyone on here is super helpful compared to other forums. A million thanks to everyone, and I look forward to being part of the 928 family.
