Default Oil pump gear removal tool options

WSM calls out a special tool for holding the oil pump gear in place for R&R.

Is there an alternate tool / method of holding the gear in place for R&R?

You just got to get the nut loosened from the rotating sprocket. Either loosen the nut before removing the TBelt, or if after... strap a Tbelt btw the crank and OP sprocket to counterhold.

Following that, you may need a simple gear puller, or it may come off with a little wiggling.

So no super special Porsche tool req'd.

Thanks Jim.

I was hoping that I could just install the flywheel lock and break it loose with the belt installed on my installed engine. I have a spare engine with belt removed that i will use your belt off method on.

Those cheap strap wrenches work great for holding the gear (without damaging it) while you break the nut loose.

I tried one of those on my spare engine and it slipped. Perhaps, probably certainly, user error. I will try it again.

Thanks

Not sure if this visualizes....

Find a socket that just fits in the holes on the sprocket. Put a long wrench on that. Then use a deep-enough socket and wrench on the nut holding the sprocket on. Hold the two wrenches and pull. The wrench that goes to the hole levers against the socket on the nut so the gear is held stationary.

You can better visualize what Glen is trying to say if you imagine a screwdriver stuck thru the holes in the oil pulley and lever it against the ribs or one of the three bolts on the pump body. Then use the screw driver to wedge the pully from moving and use the socket wrench to undo the pulley bolt.
Hope that helps.

An old timing belt could be wrapped around the oil pump pulley, the 2 tails clamped in a vice, used like a strap wrench...the timing belt does not slip.....

Jim, I just stuck a socket extension through one of the holes to counterhold and off came the nut.

To resurrect an old thread...
Am doing the "frontal campaign" for the first time
In retrospect I should have loosened the nut before I removed the belt
No amount of effort using a screwdriver/socket worked.
The old TB wrapped around the crank gear/OP gear , held in my greasy right hand did the trick. Even so., the loctite had held that nut on pretty bloody tightly!
