Question Thermostat gasket - too big?

Hi all,

Need some help.

I am in the middle of the Intake Refresh and cannot install gasket / ring item # 27 (928 106 163 00) below into my water bridge housing.

The ring / gasket is too big. I am wondering if older years have a smaller diameter housing and somehow the PO had a previous housing part installed.

Thanks

Make sure the old one had been removed first.

There is no earlier version. Did you pry the old seal out? It can be very hard to see, covered with deposits. You need to get something (screwdriver blade) between the lip and the housing, prying it away and then grab it with pliers and pull it out.

Photos courtesy of George Suennen.

Shows the old seal well in this case...usually it will blend in with the housing and not be so visible.

I just removed mine as we speak. Like Bill said, you have to pry it out. It should be all metal surface when removed. If you see black, the seal is still there.

Be careful as it can be corroded and when prying it out use a towel or rag to cover underneath it as stuff can fall and sink into the lower path of the water bridge.

I just made that mistake and a small surface piece of the gasket fell and sank....I gotta flush the system just to get it out now.

+1 what Bill said. When I replaced mine, you could not even see the insert inside but it was there.

Wow !!!

Many thank everyone.

It was still there, although its guts looked just like it was not (metal). See pix below. I could sware it was not because when I took it apart the black rubberish part disintegrated (as everything I am touching that is made of plastic or rubber during this job), so I thoight that was it and for the looks it seemed it was gone.

Took a good breath and hit it and there it was.

I guess you can be too cautious sometimes.

Many thanks

Mine still had the black surface but about a 1 inch piece broke off and sank into the waterbridge. The piece is very brittle and crumbly so it should just disintegrate and not do any blockage if I run the car but I'm going to flush the system anyways tomorrow.

Just need to find some Zerex G05. Already tried Advanced AutoParts and Wal-Mart, no luck. Going to Napa and Pepboys tomorrow.

Thanks Roger. If none of the stores here pan out I'll give you a call.

It's funny, I swear I remember seeing Zerex all over the place and now that I want some I can't find it! I hate it when that happens with things you don't really pay attention to until you really need it.
