Center console shifter surround-appearance options info needed
I reconditioned my 87 S4 black vinyl center console by gluing down all spots which had pulled up over time with Goat Tuff archery glue that Jerry Feather recommended to me, it's had a car phone, so the passenger side spot where it was mounted is a little shabby, but otherwise it's in good nick.
I tested the temp sensor, and door flap momentary switch and they are both good.
Now one of the last things i want to do is recondition the shifter surround and just make it look a little better. I was initially thinking about using vinyl/fabric spray paint as a primer, then painting it with black wrinkle paint and baking it on low heat in the oven to get a consistent wrinkle finish. However, i picked up some nice cream/beige vinyl from a surplus store here in London, Ontario and i thought the beige/cream/off white color would really look good with the black of the center console.
What are your oppinions on this, and can an amateur like me wrap the shifter surround and make it look good?

All of the shifter surrounds I've removed have been a very tight fit. I think adding the thickness of the vinyl will make it impossible to re-install and you may end up breaking it in the process. IMHO it should stay the stock black, but if that's what you want then I would recommend painting it.

It is indeed a tight fit, the vinyl would add approximately 1mm to the dimensions. However, i don't think the clearance issue would be with the channels it slides into, it would be with the thin tabs that fit into the corresponding slots. I could widen the slots with a Dremel.
