Ok, spoke to mechanic, he thinks ground straps are fine, he didn't see any obvious corrosion/damage on the 14pin, but is going to double check it.
When it failed in the garage, he jumped the starter and it started right up.
He is now considering the switch that will prevent start unless in ark or neutral- I can't remember what its called.

They forgot to change the name to 'Park Safety Switch' in about 1956 when they began wiring them to park instead of nuetral. I'm sure they'll get around to it any day now.

Ya know it's OK to start a new post for a new problem - you don't have to keep your original post (22 pages) going - unless you're into historical continuity.

Update: the radiator place has today informed us they can't fix the radiator. Very annoying, if I'd known that a week ago, I could have bought a radiator and have the car back by now-but, if I'd done that, I would have a pancake Porsche! Half a tree fell down and landed on our van and even as far as our neighbors car! Luckily, our van is super strong and just sustained a small ding on the roof. Neighbors car got a cracked windscreen and lost a mirror. If the car was back, it would have been in its usual place-and it would have been smooshed, and neighbors car would have been smooshed and I'd be far more upset! Remaining trees are being cut down before car comes home. Can't get over how lucky that was, car really would have been totaled!

So the expense of a new radiator is much better than a "smooshed" 928!

Now THAT is a great attitude, thanks for sticking with it and sharing your enthusiasm. I look forward to the time when the car is reliable enough to have a role in a video.

Thank you! We still get a great buzz every time we see it :-)
Car is home-remainder of tree is cut down, still needs horn and abs sorted, but running lovely-so far no non-starts. Might have a plan with mechanic to stop trying to find the cause (might be sorted now, might stimehow up in 2 months time) and wire in a start button for if it does no start.

Made 4 bags of silicon Cat litter to go in car and absorb damp today.
Any other tricks? Can't fit in garage and as it's a daily drive, a cover is not very practical. Oh, with tree gone, no more bird ****!

Is it leaking? CHecking for gaskets and applying silicone sealant to the bolts at the hatch hinges sometimes remedies (or partially remedies) leak problems.
