Default Ground Radiator?

I was searching around but didn't locate a thread about this. My radiator comes back from the local shop today. Was corroded pretty badly (all aluminum 928 int'l radiator). Said electrolysis ate it up pretty badly. I don't know how often Ron changed the coolant. Heads were pretty pitted as well when I did the head gaskets during last summer's rebuild.

Anyone ground their radiator to help alleviate the electrolysis issue? Where did you attach the ground wire on the frame?

I have my all-al grounded. It just developed a small leak this year after 11 yrs in service. I know that is not the norm however. I have it screwed to the side radiator mounting tab, but I'm sure a more formal location like the driver's side coil bracket would be better. I'm not convinced grounding has helped though and have read reasonable arguments against doing it. (not a 928 specific issue)

There was a good thread on this a few months ago though. Try searching on 'aluminum radiators'.

I found .1v in my system with fresh coolant. Have not grounded yet

What do you have before and after grounding?

What amount of voltage were you getting between the coolant and ground?

I haven't measured yet. Radiator shop said there was a lot of erosion inside and I should consider grounding the radiator. I am going to measure when I get the radiator back today. It is being epoxied.

Look into getting a pressure cap with a sacrificial anode in it.

Got it, good data point.

I assume the leaks were many but small at the fin to tank area?

That radiator wasn't very old, check the receipts I gave you. I am betting it was under a year old.

Another example. Get the stock stuff and you won't have an issue.

Had a Devek aluminum Rad on my car and it lasted all of 4 years. Buy a Behr, rebuild or otherwise and don't worry.

Ron. I did call 928 Int'l. He confirmed the age and you are right. But we are at about 4 years now. I bought the car from you in 2009 and you had it in about a year or so. Seems about par for these. When this one dies, I am buying a Behr from Roger now that they are available.

I am getting about 53mv when I put the red in the tank and the ground on the crossbar attachment bolts.
