Help, dead in the water in Chattanooga , TN
Just made an Atlanta to Chattanooga run through the mountains and after unloading my stuff at the hotel went to move the car out of the hotel unloading zone and.....nothing.
Everything lighting up and battery doesn't seem weak but absolutely nothing happens when I turn the key. No clicks, no dimming power signs, just nothing.
Anyone of any independents near here if I can't get it going? Any other advice?

If that doesn't work, then see if your stereo cuts off when you try to engage the starter. The ignition switch should interrupt the stereo, fog lights, etc. in the starter position.

There's no fuse for the starter motor, but you can swap out the horn relay (XVI) with the starter relay (V) as they are the same part. That may do the trick. Unfortunately, those are hard to extract without a relay puller.

It wasn't the shifter position. I may just try and jump I even if it didn't seem it needs it because I'm really out of options. I'm blocking their driveway and there's some big music festival starting in 10 minutes.
Again... Awesome

You can jump the post at the connector on the passenger side of the car to power the starter soliniodif you are careful and have some wire.
if you need me to look up the pin number I can.

Thanks Greg. I got it going but it must be a weak but not battery that got really drained after the run today but I carefully jumped and crossed my fingers it worked but it's definitely not showing a healthy charge hovering just left of 12 and dips too much flipping on lights, etc.....
Just didn't show it at fist diagnosis.
Didn't realize that don't Chattanoogas biggest festival I happening all week and my hotel is ground zero. Great part was the 928 drew an amazing amount of people stopping to ask questions and loom at it the bad part is she wasn't cooperating. Very weird entrance into a hotel and I lve 30 people all screaming out advice as I'm poking around.
Only thing better is a mint Ferrari Mondial cab pulled next to me and empathized and drew some of the crowd away. Was it wrong of me to hope he had a small engine fire to pull them all away...
I'll limp and grab a new battery to get home and figure out what's ally wrong.
Greg, I want to get down to you shop and have a pro help me put an attack plan together on brining her all the back it's just a haul to get there from Cumming. Thanks for the offer to help guys...l appreciate the forum

Ignition switch maybe.
Were you having ANY odd electrical issues before? BTW...I would not trust the dash meter for charging purposes. I would check it with a ohm meter. Glad you got it running.

Could very likely be your ground cable. The Jumping is going to provide an alternate delivery of positive + ground than your starter can get from the battery + rear ground strap (if I've read right).
You can go cheap and buy a 2GA replacement (buy something 20 or 26" in length). You should have an O'reilly auto or AutoZone within a few miles of your locale.
Those sudden "failures" seem to be very attributable to ground straps. I now roll around with a spare on me when leaving town.
Good Luck!

Just got home and read this. Sorry I am late to the party. If you have any problems in the morning just give me a call. I work just a few minutes from downtown and would be glad to help.
Check your PM for my phone number.

+ 1 on the ground cable. I just had my second one fail on my current car, one failed on my last 928 , too. Symptoms are car is running fine, shut it off, attempt a restart...nothing.....the first time it took me a while to chase it down as it was intermittant...move the cable and it would start...that worked about 3 times before it completely failed. The one I had fail 2 weeks ago failed completely in my driveway.....30 seconds later I connected a jumper cable between the battery negative and the ground wing nut...immediate start. Remove the jumper, no start. Replaced the cable, did a post mortem on the old cable, it was wet under the plastic sheath, didn't look "bad" but would not conduct much of anything...

Also, i don't think it needs to be mentioned but clean all your grounds on the car. I found the PO put dielectric grease right on grounding surfaces, which isn't really a good idea since it is non-conductive and shouldn't just be used "for ****s and giggles" just because you can. I use petroleum jelly on battery terminals on all the cars i've serviced for people, and no problems yet.

If it's not the main ground try making a bypass at the Central Electrical Panel.
Taken from the email-keepers list :
"You (along with every other 928 owner) should have a relay jumper switch in
the glove box.
Pull relay XIV (or the jumper that is there), plug the jumper switch
between terminals 30 and 87. Turn the ignition switch on, get the car ready
to crank (in neutral) and use the switch on the jumper to activate the starter.

A 'relay jumper switch' consists of a momentary 20Amp switch, a length of wire twice as long as the distance from the CE panel to the center console (my switch hides in my center console) , and two spliced on male blade disconnects (these you plug into the CE panel). Follow the directions, and once you have the blade connections inserted into the terminals when you hit the switch the starter should spin (even with the key out). (make sure you are in park or neutral because this bypasses the neutral safety switch).
You can use this to test if your fault is in the ignition switch and as a way to get you started and home. (I use a momentary toggle when my switch failed)
