Default Worn Teeth on a Intermediate Plate

I have acquired a used IMP in my ongoing quest to get my clutch to shift properly.

This plate has a few chipped/ worn teeth in only one spot on the ring gear. The rest of the teeth look good.

My concern is that when the starter motor engages the location with the worn teeth it may cause more wear and eventually cause the starter motor to not engage at all in that location.

Thoughts on the wear and should I go ahead and use it?

You have a stick shift in SF, park on a hill

Seriously for testing and if your starter is good it should be okay.

Greg:

Engines tend to stop & starters tend to re-engage at the same place. Is it possible to press off the ring gear and reinstall it 180 degrees out of phase? That's an old trick we used to do with English cars.

By the way, there is a NOS intermediate plate on ebay right now misidentified as a "flywheel." P# 928 116 004 10 - which may be a superseded # since I can't find it on my version of PET. Don't know if it would work on your '85, but it's starting at $99.00.

You should be able to rotate the IP with respect to the flywheel to give you a new starting position (I'm fairly sure the dowell pins are spaced at 120 degrees), but you'll need to reference mark and re-balance the flywheel/IM/PP assembly again.

That part number shows as an S4 pressure plate on PET, and the pics look right for that .. so for a new one it's an absolute steal at the starting price. It's definitely not a flywheel or an intermediate plate. Edit:AH beat me to it

Unfortunately the ring gear is not separate ( heated/ pressed on) to the IMP as is the ring gear on the flywheel. It is the IMP of which all of the other components are attached to.

Greg,

I would not use it. What will happen in a fairly short time is the bendix gear on your starter will hit it and jam. You starter will wear and so will the flywheel teeth. It is hard to believe the gear could get worn so badly in 30K miles unless the starter was very bad or abused a lot - like being clicked on when the engine was running.

Is it possible to take the gear off your old intermediate plate? On the older plates the gear was not part of the intermediate plate.

Or you could just make me a decent offer on the one I loaned you.
