I think so. It's too bad the internal bushing is not part of the rebuild kit. If you had the rack apart you could machine a new bushing.
Lock the steering wheel and raise one front tire off the ground, grab the tire at 3 and 9 o'clock and see how much you can change the toe, and have someone watch the rack shaft move fore and aft. The amount of axial [er, make that "radial"] play and toe change could be significant and related. One of my 928 buddies machined an external bushing from Delrin to fit inside the end of the rack housing and we staked it with a small screw through the rack housing. The external bushing reduced the axial play down to a small amount and has held up well - probably 70K miles so far.

car is on jacks
I noticed this while i was checking the play to my new front wheel bearings
When i was adjusting the play it seems not to go away actually it was the steering rack.

Thanks bill, i was thinking that too about machinig a bushing that wil reduce the play to a minimum
But the play at PS is more than DS.
First need some beer than grab my tools.

The passenger (long side) of the rack is the side with the problem. So, Patrick, yes, my bushing went in the end space as you show, but the other end.

Do you know/remember what kind of work he did on the Delrin bushing, and was this bushing one of the standard 4 for the steering rack ?

That was a custom made bushing..and no, its not one of the four mounting bushings for the rack.
I have this same play on the drivers side..not in & out, but up & down.
I suppose, some could be made...Id be willing to do this if there is interest.
Just need some really accurate measurements on shaft OD, rack ID, rack OD at the end, and depth into the rack required.

It has been said here that the inside dimensions of the end snouts on the rack housing are not machined/consistent/exactly round. If so, it might be hard to mass produce an external bushing. However, in my case the rack end seemed rather nicely finished (not a rough casting) inside and required no tweaking to fit snugly.

Thanks for the information re the bushing - will be helpful
