Split rear CV joint axle boots: to replace boots without axle removal

That was cute. Thanks, Randy. If you can leave the joint inplace and just clean both joints, and slide the boot on this easily with a long oil spout, that does reduce the work quite a bit.

If you are going to cheap out on something as simple as CV boots, please sell the car so someone else can have fun.

I'm kind of insulted but I see your point (and I do have thick skin ;-)
I'm not cheaping out, I'm "timing out": I just don't have the time to do it and I don't want to have my car down for 2 or more weeks while I try to find the time. I enjoy driving it too much.

Trying to get ready for a DE this coming weekend & was under my car; had the displeasure of seeing this on my passenger outside CV boot! I felt like Figures, it couldn't of happened a few months ago. Unless its avoided detection in my travels in the underworld! I haven't noticed any grease on the drive & there's none on the underside of the car.
Which gives me all of this week to see if either of the 2 reputable shops I trust can work it in. No way do I have the time to do it myself in the next five days. Think I'd have the best chance by getting the rebuilt axles from Mark A since it'd require less time & less mess(more incentive) for a shop to get it done. Don't want to think about coast to coast expedited shipping!
Since its the 1st DE I've been able to work into my schedule in 10 mos, I keep getting tempted with the wrong thought of, Hey, maybe you could make it thru the DE & then take your time getting it repaired. Isn't that what duct tape is for!!

Podguy had it right. Depends how long road dirt has been getting in there. Not long, add more grease and motor on, however, I have to say, mess and all, the total disassembly and replacement of all 4 boots following procedures on this list was the most satisfying to me, allowing inspecting the area where all HP gets transferred to, and the act of reversing the shafts helping to extend the life of the axles.

Not sure I understand the total aversion to split boots. I installed some on a Front wheel drive (so even more stress on the boot due to steering movement) car I owned some time ago as a stop gap until I could change them out for real ones. 5 Years later the boot failed but not on the glued joint/split line. So in practice as good as a normal boot.
I don't get the issues with cleaning the old grease out. I just pull the joint completely apart and wipe off the old grease with paper towels then degrease normally, the reassemble and inject the new grease. I am assuming that the joints can be dissasembled like most FWD CV joints.

I have done CV boots both ways.
1) replace boots and regrease. I had to take to a shop to press out the part that the oil funnel trick was aiming at bypassing. Still less than a day of work. Had to buy that noisy pneumatic torque gun, but who doesn't want one of those?
2) Install a rebuilt axle.
This is about as far a mechanical klutzes like me go.

It is so easy and you will realize how easy once you get into it.
If you have an air compressor/impact with a long extension its a breeze to remove the inner axle, outer is a snap. Go for it doing it right because the passenger side will be next.
Don't do it half a$$ed, it will bother you. It's a first timer 2 hour job if you really take your time.
