Default Back from the dead!

I bought this about a month ago, and it hadn’t run in 5+ (Probably closer to 10) years. It would crank only by jumping the starter relay and that’s where it began.

First I established that the spring on the ignition switch wasn’t resetting the key position so I replaced it, but still nothing. I traced all wires from switch to CE panel and discovered a failure of the neutral safety switch. It appeared the PO had tried to install a aftermarket amp, which absolutely screwed up a lot of the wiring.
Now it cranked, but after lots of searching on the forum and some help from Roger, I sent the LH unit to Rich for inspection along with my EZF unit. Rich is a great resource and he discovered my LH system had multiple issues. Luckily he had one in stock, so I got that. In the meantime I cleaned all the grounds and replaced all the 53 relays along with a kickdown relay. Still nothing, so I then started tracing the injector harness and found multiple shorts. I replaced all 8 harnesses along with some fresh fuel. Charged up the battery and this morning it started for the first time! Very rewarding after many hours studying the WSM and tracing many wires.

It’s running better now than this video, I plan on replacing oil and coolant today and see if it can idle normally. There is no coolant in the oil and that white smoke is also now gone. I do think the MAF needs a tune up but I’m just excited I can back it out for the garage now without pushing.

Next up: figure out the rear latch and start looking for interior pieces.

Awesome! Nothing like getting a car up and running from the dead.
Put your location in your signature, and the year (I can tell it is an 85/86) and maybe you can get some local hands-on help.

Hi Sfzobie!

Congrats and I love the stories about the saves on this forum!

Some pics of the engine compartment before and after add to the entertainment. ;-)
