Pretty much says it; anyone have a known good rear AC evaporator they'd like to part with? To fit my '89 S4.
I decided to repair and reconnect the rear AC that was blocked off at the couplings on the underbody, under the pass. side footwell. Evacuated the (minimally) working main AC (recovered .11 lbs of R12) and replaced all the O-rings for the rear AC, then read the receipt from 2000 that explained that the rear AC was plugged at the (then) owner's request in lieu of replacing the leaky evaporator.

I'd think they rarely develop leaks.
If your patient... at any given time, there are usually several used ones on eBay for sell, so just watch and wait for one at a reasonable price. Just save an eBay search for them on your web browser and check it every several days.
One recently sold for $45US plus $15 shipping.

Hey Bill,
I would test your evaporator before just assuming it leaks... (unless it obviously had a hole punched in it)...but they do rarely leak...usually it's at the rear expansion valve...

Has anyone found one? they are NLA, and mine DOES leak. I was able to dunk the whole rear assembly in a tub with the expansion valve connected and pressurize the lines. Bubbles from the fittings.
I haven't found anyone confident enough to attempt a weld or brazing of the fittings, and I've asked the most talented guy I know. he wasn't sure if he could get the underside/backside of the fittings facing the center of the unit.
Searched and found some people have used epoxy but I'm still researching that one. I would have preferred to just buy a new one, damn the cost, but that isn't an option.

Fraggle, find a competent A/C shop in your location. The fittings should be hard soldered " sweat fit" the solder will follow the heat of the flame. It's an easy fix.

Did you check 928 Int'l? I got a used one from them a couple of months ago; supposedly pressure tested and good. Haven't installed or tested it yet, so I don't know for sure that it's good.

I did find one from someone who removed it from their car; - I guess as a track car prep. Folks are out there who did a rear AC delete. Look for threads on 'Muggy Weld' for some successful repairs.
Good Luck!

Mine was leaking where the copper tubes go into the front. I found the leaks with some dye, and it appeared that most of them were leaking (if the rear evap is going to leak, this is the likely culprit). I asked my radiator guy try to repair it, and he tried, but no dice. Those joints are crimped, and there's apparently some epoxy on the inside which didn't respond well at all to the heat (he actually predicted this outcome). He made me well aware that the effort might ruin it before he started, and it did, but it was leaking anyway. I got a used one from 928Int'l, and it appears to be holding.
