Default Manual Gear Stick Fitting Problem

Hi

I'm trying to fit a standard gear stick leaver to an '84 manual but finding it impossible.

There must be some sort of compression tool used thats thin enough to get into the space. Any know what this tool is or can suggest one??

Thanks.

Ben

springs are evil. i have heard of people using wire to tie down the spring, then cut loose when installed.

Needle nose Vise Grips.

Or compress the springs in a vise and bind them down with some thin wire (like fastener safety wire), then cut the wire once the springs are in place.

As Guy said above, vice makes it easy.

Compress both springs, wrap (very thin) wire around it. What you may have to do is file down flat spots on the 2 "barrels" of the shifter. The springs fit tight and when wrap wire around them, they are hard to push on to these barrels. The flat spots make a little relief area so you can push them on. Once the c clips are in place, cut the wire and release tension on the springs.

Depending on your access or how tight the wire is crammed in there, you can either try to pull it out or just leave it there. No one will ever know but you.

Porker- i feel your pain brother.. over 3 hours, thin tie wire kept snapping, couldn't use heavier, or it wouldn't go back on, so i took out the plastic 1/8 spacer and it gave me just enough room to get er back on using needlenose vise grips. i'm sure this isn't the best way, but i was close to losing my sh*t by about 1am that night.

i did see some people say they left the springs off, not sure which is worse, leaving the springs out, or the plastic spacer..

I just left them out, but utilized new plastic bushings.

Problem solved thanks to Rennlist.

Couldn't quite get all the wire all out from behind the springs in the end but I don't think this will effect anything. I've tested it and it works.
