Default Please help: how to removing cooling fan shroud

Trying to remove the fan shroud, but the AC line keeps getting in the way. Can some one please advise on how to get the shroud out? Thanks.

Hmm... I had thought that the shroud just bolts on with two bolts at the top, and is otherwise held on by tabs that fit into slots in the bottom of the radiator.

You have to disconnect the fans, the air pump hose and the intake hoses, but other than that, the other hoses shouldn't be too much of an issue. You should be able to lean the top of the shroud back a bit, push the radiator hose and A/C line out of the way, and pull the shroud up and out.

This is mostly from memory, though, as I currently have a 5-speed GTS. But I don't remember the '88 S4 being much different.

Unfortunately its not that straight forward, once the top two screws are undone the shroud is free to life up but on either side of the radiator there are two oil cooling connection that interfere therefore the shroud has to be pushed back towards the engine, unfortunately at this point the AC line interferes. It looks like the only way to move forward is to remove the oil cooling lines, for this one needs a 27mm and 30mm spanners which I don't have.

First undo your airtubes and the two M6 screws holding the shroud to the radiator. Then you have to get the air pump inlet hose out of the bottom of the air pump filter housing. Then make sure there's no ziptie holding the lower radiator hose to the shroud.

Not sure how/where the shroud would hang up on an A/C line, my sense was that they hang up on the oil cooler lines on the driver's side. But it should be wiggle-able- you might buy some extra clearance if you undo the power steering reservoir clamp, which lets the res get pushed back and out of the way a bit.

Its the oil cooler lines to the rad that have to be loosend then turn the elbows. You have to have big wrenches 30 and 32mm.

Remove the 2 bolts at the top then the fan connectors and the tabs from below. Wiggle gently.

To remove the fan shroud you need to have an open end wrench of 27mm and 32mm
First remove the power steering tank clamp,
then remove the 2 shroud bolts at the top of the radiator,
remove the fan harness and connectors, move out of the way
remove the air pump hose from under the filter,
push the shroud back about 2 inches
Find the oil and trans cooler lines that attach to the top sides of the end tanks
hold the 27mm fitting while loosening the 32mm cap nut,
the wrenches will fit between the radiator and shroud.

Disconnect both of the top hoses that connect to the radiator end tanks,
push them out of the way,
The oil cooler pushes to the rear and the trans line pushes down and to the side

Some oil will leak out of both of these hoses so have drain pans handy under the car.

Once these lines are removed pull the shroud up and clear of the car.
NOTE you may have the fat AC line hitting on the shroud,
if so gently push the line back about 1 inch it will bend so dont overdo it.

Be careful of the metal fan harness clamp fittings,
these can cut hoses and scratch other parts as the shroud is lifted.

Good Lord, I am getting too old for this! had to pickup an adjustable wrench from Walmart as all others were closed. Those 32mm oil cooler lines were very hard to undo. Main problem was the fat AC line, it is too stiff to push out of the way, ended up removing the AC compressor from its mounts to push it and the fat AC line back. I am trying to service the timing belt tensioner, do I need to remove the main pulley. My car is an automatic, how do I stop the engine from turning? Thanks again.

You will need a flywheel lock (see image). You can purchase this from 928Rus or 928 International. Some jimmy a screwdriver in there to lock the flywheel, but with the torques used on the crankshaft nut I would only use the flywheel lock. It is secured to the flywheel housing cover and locks into the flywheel to keep the crankshaft from turning (see images).
I refer you to Dwayne's website - look up timing belt procedure - you will find this helpful - http://dwaynesgarage.norcal928.org/

What kind of service to your tensioner ?

If your car is an automatic, use LONGER bolts for the flywheel lock or you WILL pull the threads out.
