Default Moving to Dallas/Fort Worth area

Looks like I'll soon be joining you for future First Saturday 928 cars and coffee outings.

My wife and I will be moving to the Dallas/Fort Worth area by the middle of next month. I'm currently in Tulsa, but will be moving to the metroplex. Any suggestions on places/area to look into would be appreciated. I'll be working out at AFW Airport, and am hoping for a not too miserable commute (if that's possible). It's just my wife and I and a 5 lb Yorkie, so we don't need/want a huge place, but garage space is a plus (too many car/motorcycle projects).

I figure we will initially be renting till we get a chance to learn the area, at which point we'll start looking for a house.

I haven't spent much time in the Dallas area, just for the 928 OCIC weekend a couple years ago, and the occasional day trip flying into DFW and commuting to AFW and back, so I don't really know the area that well, but here are a few things we'd like to find in the area. My wife and I tend to like areas where there is relatively close access to restaurants, coffee shops and the like. Close access to biking trails both road and MTB would also be a huge plus. We've heard some good things about the Fort Worth area so will probably start looking there, and I've heard there's some MTB riding in the Grapevine area so may see what's in that area too, but of course we're open to all input and suggestion.

Also, I'm curious as to what is entailed in the vehicle inspections down there. I've seen reference to both safety and emissions. Is it just an OBDII check, Idle HC/NOx or rolling road? Is there a year cutoff for requirements?

Keller, Southlake, Trophy club, Grapevine, Coppell, all nice areas. I lived in Keller before moving to Austin.
Southlake is my favorite. Traffic? well... there's a lot of road construction.

Welcome to the Metroplex. Your 85 will just get a safety inspection, no emissions test required.

Welcome Simon. Already been mentioned but anywhere in Keller is very nice, and close to Alliance.

Roanoke is also really nice and is really close to the airport. That would put you about in the middle of Me (North Richland Hills) and Sean R/Roger Tyson. Good company (in my opionion LOL).

As far as inspection, the cut off is 25 years for a rolling emissions test. Last year was my last (1987 S4). Looks like you have an 85 and an 87 looking at your signature. So you should be good to go, just a standard vehicle inspection with no emission's testing.

Your other cars in your sig will vary. If they have an OBDII plug, then it doesn't have to go on the rollers.

Congrats on the new job. You have landed in a good 928 location!!

Edit: 85 MY with an 87FPR! LOL.

Thanks, everyone for the suggestions, and great info on the areas to start our search. Hope to take a day early next week to come down and drive around a bit to become more familiar with the layout. I knew Sean and Roger where down there somewhere, and it will be great to be close to a more active 928 community. there are a few up here in the Tulsa area, but they seem to be hidden away most of the time.

I'll keep you informed as things progress.

Thanks,

Simon,
Good luck with the move and we will add your email address to the local list.

Simon, welcome to the DFW shark tank, one of the most active groups in the country. I agree with all of the recommendations given so far.

Lots of good places in the NW of the metroplex. Pretty much everything you've asked about is right down hiway 114. If you get near 114, you'll be a few driving minutes from lots of restaurants and shops around Grapevine. Since you have no kids, schools aren't important. Find some rolling hills just north of 114 and check around there.

Hey! I resemble those remarks.

Congrats on the new work in DFW. As a 928 enthusiast, you will love it down there. I make it down there several times a year for their monthly GTG's. In fact, that's the majority of my 928 driving time each year. Roger, Sean, Chuck, Jim, Brad, Andy, Mike, gosh I could go on for quite awhile - just a great group of guys and a joy to be around. Have fun!

Dallas is pretty nice and traffic is not too bad (excellent when compared to cities like Atlanta). Apartments are cheap, the city is for the most part very clean. If you're bringing your Porsche, get an apartment which has individual garages unless you want door dings.

Simon,

Move to Brad Websters Neighborhood in Argyle. Plenty of room for a big garage, minutes from Sean and Roger!!

Welcome to Texas, make sure the first thing you buy is one of these.
And Fly it high!!

Chuck is right, Argyle is a great place to live and I am 16 miles from Alliance Airport..
As far as the inspections go, after 25 years it is only a safety inspection. No Smog.
It's been a while since we had a Tech Session at my house due to my crazy work schedule, Might need to get one going next month.
Would love to have you stop by..
