Default Ticking noise and debris with Defrost on

I usually have the fan/AC on but hardly ever use the defrost button, but I needed to earlier this spring. When I switched to defrost I noticed that there was a ticking noise and then later I noticed that I had a bunch of little debris all over me and inside the cabin (it looked like tiny bits of foam; like the stuff that lines the fender wells and under the hood and degrades over time. Anyone every experience this before? Is there some of that foam near the blower fan that could be falling apart and being caught by the fan? Or, could some foam from the engine compartment have been sucked in there? Would you suggest to run it for a while and see if it goes away?

Any advice would be appreciated.

The flap in the center vent that you can manually close has a foam edge to seal the flap when it is closed. Maybe the defrost-flap in the HVAC has a similar foam edge.

Sounds more like a mouse or some other varmit has had some lunch and made a little home in there. Seems to be the number one way they get into the cars I have had here. That and they seem to like to like to make homes in the exhast system also. Its kinda fun to see them shoot out the pipe on first start up in the spring. Had a mouse come for a trip with me to the store today i'm thinking he will have a long walk home, seen him jump out of the under side just after I parked. He was none to happy running across the parkinglot, I guess he liked trucks better.
The best cure I have found is moth ***** but I just can't stand the smell myself.

A good theory, but there are no other signs of a mouse having made a home in the car. There has only been one mouse and that was a clever little guy more than 20 years ago that crawled inside the air intake tube and made its home for the winter on the air filter. My first car was a 73 914, which I haven't run in 10 years--my project once I get the 928 all ticketyboo. It has been stored in a shed on a farm. Now that car has had some mices in it. I called around recently to find a pro to get rid of the mouse droppings/urine but was surprised that no company does it.

For my winter hibernation, I place steel wool in the exhaust and up front at both air intakes.

It isn't unusual to have bits of foam ejected when you have the fan on high with airflow to the defrosters. Irritating, but not a major problem.

@ MainePorsche--good idea for winter storage

@ Wally--good to know it's not unusual and not a major problem. I'll remove the grill and see if I can vacuum out any loose pieces and then hope that it goes away.
