Default S4+ Sunroofless cars: US vs. ROW

I got to thinking about how rare sunroofless S4's are in the states- Of the 6656 US cars from '87 to '95, only 52 (0.78%) are sunroofless- 30 1987's, 15 1988's, 5 1989's, 1 1990, and 1 1994.

1987: 30 out of 2421 (1.2%)

1988: 15 out of 1794 (0.8%)

1989: 5 out of 1189 (0.4%)

1990: 1 out of 459 (0.2%)

1991: 0 out of 387

1993: 0 out of 209

1994: 1 out of 120 (0.8%)

1995: 0 out of 77

In the ROW, out of 14055 S4+ cars, 3569 did not have a sunroof (25.4%) . 749 '87's, 749 '88's, 627 '89s, 516 '90's, 376 '91's, 260 '92's, 139 '93's, 88 '94's, and 65 '95's.

There's your Saturday night 928 trivia for you. Yes, been a slow night here.

interesting stats! Personally I would not part with my sunroof, on the sunny days there is nothing better than the sun hitting your face while cruising down the highway. I'm actually pretty impressed with our sunroofs, They are put on the right place and there is no buffeting or excessive noise. Other cars tend to have them sometimes behind the driver almost which defeats the purpose. I would only want my track car without one and maybe that explains why there are a limited number of sunroofless 928's?

Thanks for sharing this particular trivia with us, Rob!

It is indeed not easy to find a late model sunroofless car, it took a bit of patience to find one during my search of my 928...they are out there though.

OK, can't resist so a few more photo's:

I agree, the S4 sunroofless is a rare find in the US. The extra headroom for the tall driver is a real benefit! They are my favorite configuration of 928.

I'm guessing these are the production numbers and the actual numbers still on the road today would be even smaller. A sunroofless '89 would be a cool find!

THANKS for the trivia, Rob!

Hey Arnoud - fantastic looking GTS!!!

Sun in my face is not my favorite thing, but I lived in Texas. I think I'd prefer the extra headroom but I'm not sure ... it was very nice to see Orion guarding my return from Cal. as I trekked across I-10 for two nights.

And just to round it out for U.S. cars with 17-digit VIN's:

1980: 780 out of 1630 cars (47.8%)

1981: 193 out of 1649 cars (11.7%)

1982: 383 out of 2636 cars (14.5%)

1983: 147 out of 2084 cars (5.5%)

1984: 162 out of 3007 cars (5.4%)
