Default analog to digital video compression for race video! LAGUNA SECA APRIL 29th '12

I used to be on the absolute, leading edge of the subject, now, my old pentium 90 is dead, and alll the stuff to compress and digitize analog video is rendered usless.
So, how do we take 8mm tapes and get them to the hard drive compressed as MPEG files in a cheap, easy way????

before i had to use the DAZZLE (actual prototype) and my old PC along with a cd rom burner. (parallel port type ) . Im sure , its a lot easier now, but need to have some help to pick a cheap but effective way to do it.

So, little help?????

I want to post the video from the SCCA ITE /AV8SS race . i have some great rear cam from the go pro, and 8mm out the front for the in car cam. need to get it all mpeg'ed.

is your camera a dv or equiped with any av outs or firewire/usb? id imagine the easiest way would be if only av out is available to just get a decent capture card and get it in with any app of your choosing (windows movie maker should work)

He'll have Svideo/Composite outputs.

You need a device to convert that to Firewire DV25 format.

Theyre out there, not too expensive..

suppose those boxes provide the video in a format that can be imported to media maker for editing? funny, the dazzle is still around. i have one of the very first prototypes. (beta version) im sure it still works, but it plugs into the computer via the old printerport parrallel port which no computers have anymore.

Ya..anything modern will take DV25 format..the modern cheap SD camcorder _standards_ format.

http://www.avermedia.com/product/Pro...il.aspx?Id=569

Last year I converted appx 20 120min 8mm tapes using this...all digitized on the Hard drive and the kids watch their "home movies" whenever. Works great but as you know a 120 min tap takes 120 minuts to record.

Tony take a look at the link I posted above. Same device, different skin. May be different software. That Aver looks like it has better polish.

That's cheap enough to add to the arsenal just-in-case.

MK: The consumer mini HD cameras with real 1080p are getting cheap enough that it's hard to justify offering 480i video of anything anymore. For a few $hundred or less you get image stabilization, real lenses with available attachments like filters, ability to lock the focus on something other than the windshield frame, and of course better sound. In a smaller form factor to boot. Real software for HD video is getting cheap and easy too, enabling you to drop the rear camera shots into a corner of the front shots for instance. It's a new century already!

i know ! i did like my digital camera by cannon, but when it broke i had to use the 8mm, and of course, its some of the best footage in a while and both cameras were filming so some good stuff. just got to get the 8mm on the computer for movie maker editing. as a side note, sure would like to dump a lot of those 8mm tapes from the past on the computer and on a back up drive.

nice to hear the prices of HD cameras are down and the fancy window in windo editing you can do. is that the editing software, or the camera that allows this? i want to take my go pro and put that in a window of the main incar footage.

It's software. Movie Maker is cheap and easy for basic stuff, but maybe you want something a touch better to do PIP and manage 1080p. A few years ago I had a chance to work with a crew doing some production work on the pre-parade show for our little New Years Day flower festival, and the whole thing was prep'd using Sony "Vegas Movie Studio". I've since upgraded a couple times to add the full hi-def and Blu-Ray capability. The UI is very consistent with version updates so very short re-learning curve. You can usually find it for less than $100 at Fry's or Amazon. I run it in the field on my Sony laptop with 18.3" 2200 x 1200 display, so the monitoring window fits at full resolution, editing frame on a second monitor.

Like any other software, the best one is the one you know, o I'm sure you'll hear more opinions.

+1 for Sony Vegas...
it is a very robust and user friendly video editing authoring application. We do quite a bit of video editing and transcoding and my staff really prefers it to the many of the other applications available. Cost is very reasonable too.

MK-

i did check on that DigitalRapids card and i do have one, but it is HUGE and will require a substantial chassis to hold it. Not sure what kind of machine you have but you can check out the hardware requirements here...

I believe i may have a few olde Viewcast Osprey cards that may be a bit more consumer friendly,

...i will look for and let you know if you are still interested...
