...for in car video, i set my father up with a "Sony HDR-CX110 HD Handycam" hooked up to a Traqmate video/data aquisition system and the system works GREAT...highly reccommend it. Camera auto starts & stops at track GPS start/finish line and is automatically synchronized with the lap data when imported with the traqstudio software...The camera records SD or HD .mpg files (interlaced) that can be easily moved form camera to laptop via MicroSD...

it is a very robust and user friendly video editing authoring application. We do quite a bit of video editing and transcoding and my staff really prefers it to the many of the other applications available. Cost is very reasonable too.

i did check on that DigitalRapids card and i do have one, but it is HUGE and will require a substantial chassis to hold it. Not sure what kind of machine you have but you can check out the hardware requirements here...

I believe i may have a few olde Viewcast Osprey cards that may be a bit more consumer friendly,

thanks for the offer. yeah, i have only a laptop at home now. (a bunch of old ones too) and pretty much looking for the USB small plug in hardware to do the conversion. sounds like i need to go to frys for the hardware and the Vegas software to get back in the swing of things. pretty funny, i was one of the very first people in the world to do MPEG, when they were writing the standards, now, im probably futher behind the curve than most 1st graders!

Default 8mm conversion

Here's another idea. Sony Digital8 camcorders will play the old analog 8mm tapes, convert them to digital real time, and output through the firewire port. I have digitized over 50 tapes, many of them analog. You might be able to find a working camera at a pawn shop or eBay for $100.
