Just an FYI -

I bought a 397 piece nitrile (oil and coolant resistant) o-ring kit at Harbor Freight for a mere $6.00. It has several each of many different sizes.

I originally bought it to replace the o-rings on the hose fittings when I replaced the radiator side tank.

This is the metric size kit - they also have a standard size kit:

Sorry, I made a mistake, it is ID 25, OD 32 mm (3,5 mm thick).

Randy, I have a similar blue box!

Sort of a bit off-topic: do you need to take the reservoir out to get the sender in?

No, but it takes a bit of finagling. It helps to loosen the reservoir mounting points.

When inspecting my 89 S4 Expansion Tank, here is what I found. The Level Sensor floating part disintegrated inside the Tank. I found many of its pieces, (sorry for the blurry picture) but now it is anyone's guess if they are somewhere around the system.

Interestingly that when I did the PPI, there was coolant level warning message, when I met the PO again the next day, he told me he fixed it and the message was gone. Well, the wire was disconnected from the sensor.

How do you get the tank out to where you can remove the sending unit. Pretty tight quarters.

Also, for Randy. I thought you were from the Soo. Why would you want to live near palm trees?

Barney from the Keweenaw. If you don't know where that is, I suggest you can no longer claim to be a Canuck and California just does not cut it. A man without a country (home)!

To remove it, you have to remove two 10 mm screws that hold the tank to the car, unplug the connector from the sensor (mine was already unpluged thanks to the PO), unscrew and remove two small hoses that connect to the top of the tank and unscrew and remove the hose from the bottom. All in all fairly quick, but yes a bit tight. You may want to drain the coolant or suck it with a manual pump or something. Mine was pretty low because I just finished the Intake and so did not have to worry about that.

Thanks for reviving this thread. I just bought a new tank and was looking at the sensor wondering what size o-ring it took. Nothing in the PET...
