TT bearings about to go?
5-speed, car is in neutral, you can hearing bearing noise as I let the clutch out. I was hoping it was pilot bearing, but replacing that didn't help. Is a failing TT bearing a safe guess?

Something is, that's for sure. Sorry I can't help more thsan that. Take a long plASTIC TUBE (FLEXIBLE) AND USE AS A STETHOSCOPE TO ISOLATE WHERE THAT SOUIND IS COMING FROM. pUT IT RIGHT IN THE tt AND SEE IF THAT IS WHERE IT IS.

Does the shift lever suddenly start shaking above a certain RPM? That was the symptom when my TT bearings went out.
I agree that it sounds like something behind the clutch is not turning smoothly. Do you notice the same noise while coasting with the clutch in (i.e. TT being turned by transmission rather than by the engine)?

My symptoms: Severe shifter vibration above 3500 rpm. First the plastic insert on the forward shift rod pivot disintegrated. Repairing that issue didnt fix the vibration but did restore ability to shift.
It turned into a great 'opportunity' to learn about:
Constantine's TT repair service
The Lizard short shifter
Transmission input shaft seal
Transmission mounts
All in all, the car is much better for having these issues fixed.
Good luck to you!

Do you feel vibration (more than normal) when engaged vs disengaged?
Does that vibration exist at certain speeds and not other speeds?
Is there any vibration when disengaged?
If it is the TT then here is a nice solution...http://www.blackseard.com/site/index...&id=5&Itemid=7
They can also rebuild your tube for you if you don't want to attempt it.

The noise goes away any time the clutch is pushed in. I hear it not only when in neutral and clutch out, but when clutch is out and I am driving. I thought it might be a half-shaft at first, but since it makes the noise sitting in neutral, I assumed something in the TT. The clutch was replaced not too long ago. The noise was there before and after the clutch work.

Definitely sounds like the shaft slapping around in the TT to me.
You're doing the right test (silent when clutch is in... Noise when drive shaft is turning in neutral).
Mine was really bad at >5400 rpm, but I've heard others say the onset is at much lower RPM.
I am guessing that your bearings may have also migrated down the TT.
You can actually check to see if your front or rear bearings have moved by dropping the exhaust and heat shields, then sliding a tape measure down the TT's from either end (remove rubber inspection covers).
You'd need to do this work if you are going to pull the TT anyway.
I just did this job on my '91 GT and would be gald to coach from the sidelines with the stuff I learned along the way.

Really difficult to tell the difference between bad torque tube bearings and a bad input shaft bearing (5th gear bearing) inside the transmission. Best way to tell is to remove the torque tube and spin the shaft. If it is noisy, fix that first.
If the bearings migrate, that's when people "pick-up" the vibrations they are talking about in the above posts.
Bearings that migrate aren't necessarily noisy.

+1 on Greg's post above... I didn't hear anything with my migrated bearings until I was a hi-rev.
No vibration otherwise noted... And bearings were not in terrible shape... I just replaced WYAIT.
