Nothing compares to the build quality, and performance.
This is especially true when you factor in the cost to actually get into one.
Some of us though the bug has bitten far far harder than others......

I had broken my back racing moto-X, then sold my '80 Spitfire since I couldn't get in it from the wheelchair, and couldn't fix it on the side of the road from a wheelchair and couldn't get a wheelchair in the Spit and it didn't have an auto trans (probably not enough HP to even move the car if it did have an auto! LOL!)...
By '95 I REALLY wanted another sports car but now it needed to be an automatic. Always loved the 512bb F-cars and the Countach but of course they were out for so many reasons. First Porsche I ever drove was my uncles brand new '84 911 Cab, but the 911's were pretty much out because I couldn't afford a '90+ tip, and there is not much room for a w/c in them either...
Start looking for alternatives. Really like the '90+ Nissan 300ZX, but it's a Nissan...couldn't I do better than that??? I thought I could. Then I remembered a young doctor (just a few years older than me actually) that bought an '88 S4 5spd back in '91 or '92 and was RAVING about the car. It was black and didn't ever really catch my eye but I remember him saying how amazing it was and I should buy the white '87 auto that the guy he bought his car from was also selling...
Start looking at 928's and I am pretty much sold... Buy my '88 S4 auto in '96 and I am TOTALLY IN! The car has super car performance, amazing but understated looks, easy to drive fast, room for my w/c and still room for at least one other person...
When new they were 50% more expensive than the 911's of the same MY and as used cars are 15% to 25% cheaper than those same 911's! The will out run all of them and do so with more panache and class as well!
Now I have more of them than just about anyone not in a 928 related business! I just can't get enough of them!!

Wanted to build a small Lotus 7 style kit car but couldn't see my wife enjoying a Sunday drive with no roof, windscreen or boot (trunk) to put the picnic basket in. Plus when I got into one I was told it was better if I wore racing shoes to drive it.
Thought about a Porsche after visiting my cousin in Germany and he took me for a drive on the winding roads from 1 village to the next at 200 kph. That thing never felt like it was going to lose grip.
911's too expensive and I saw the 928, read about all the problems and thought this is a great cruising car for the Sunday drive, get up and go when I want and I can spend a bit of time fixing it.
Bought the first car I drove, lucky I had talked to the mechanic who gave me an honest opinion and he was spot on with all the problems except for a fairly new water pump which failed in the first 12 months.
Had it 6 years and have loved working on it nearly as much as the driving. I cannot see me selling this car. Spent so much money on it I am going to enjoy it for the next 10 years with very little to spend on it!

I always thought that owning a Porsche would be out of my price range.
I saw my first 928 when the owner of the VW dealer I worked at in T.O. took us to the Porsche/Audi show in 89.
What I saw under the hood blew me away (twin duel over head cams on a V8!!!)
Now I new it was out of my range.
fast forward to 3 years ago, on a holiday just after the big D, and God smiled on me.
I now own a Euro 89
To answer your question, Because there is no other.

I remember seeing the 928 for the first time in Road and Track in the mid 70’s. I was just a kid, but I knew I was in love. I never would have believed then that I could own one let alone two that aren’t drivable.

I once wrote a 2-page article on this topic. It was published in a book called "The Real 928", with articles collected by David Hemmings and published by the British Porsche Club. Some here have copies that I signed...

Why did I buy one - I think every one else has covered that.
Why do I still own two after a combined 18 years ownership. There isn't another car specific forum like this (plus local email lists etc) for any other car. I have too many 928 related friends (wether or not I've actually met them in person but I'ld like to think I have actually met a lot more than most) to consider moving away. I have too much time invested in learning about 928s to start all over.
Perhaps most importantly what would replace a car that can do 500 miles in 4 hours incl fuel stops with 200 bottles of wine in the back and still handle better than I can drive it, get smiles from pretty girls and jealous glances from almost every male along with the inevitable "Is that the new Porsche mister?" questions from boys young and old.
Stoopid question really.
Edit PS Ssssssssh, don't tell anyone they'll all want one.

At about 18, I would drive by the Porsche dealership in my beat up 73 Ford Capri and wonder what it must be like to own such a beautiful car. I would see doctors and lawyers around town driving their 928s and I would covet thy car and never give their trophy wife/girlfriend a second look.
There are not many cars that you can park and steal a glance over your shoulder as you walk away, thinking, man that's a good looking car. When that happened to me I knew I had the right car.

I also remember...
When I was about 18, before a concert at the Montreal Forum, I went to a Porsche dealership nearby with a friend.
We went inside (after mutch hesitation!) to look at the cars. We both were Porsche "dreamer".
A salesman came to see us and ask if he can help us with a nice smile on his face.
We told him we were only looking and dreaming about owning one.
He said "It always starts this way".
Now we both own one and still like to remember that magic moment for us.
