90GT - Engine out Torque tube removal
Hi there,
Been doing some searching for a write up on torque tube removal when I have the engine out.
As Iam currently doing a overhaul of my 90GT engine I have the engine out of the car. Im pklanning to do the torque tube bearings at the same time.
Are there any writeups on torque tube removal whilst the engine is out? I suppose it would be quite a bit easier. Do I manage to get TT far enough fwd to clear the trans at the rear, without touching the transmountbolts and slide the trans back?
Ive done TT jobs before, but on autos so Im not a complete newbie to the job...
Any input appreciated!

The torque tube can be removed with the engine in the car. You will have to cut a small and useless piece of the bell housing. The torque tube can be pulled down gaining access to the rear bolts. It helps to loosen the trans mounts and push the trans back an inch or so.
Actually on a five speed you may not have to cut the bell housing. Here is a page on rebuilding the torque tube.

I actually found it quite easy to do.
Good luck.

Hi 993turbo,
It sounds like one of your concerns is undoing the trans positioning bolts and moving the transmission rearwards. I had to do that in order to take my engine out of my auto (I realise yours is manual). But if your engine is already out and you haven't had to do this then I would think that you may not have to. BUT in any event doing that is a very trivial job and the transmission can easily be slid back and forth as required so I wouldn't be concerned even if loosening the bolts were necessary.
If the manual is anything like the auto at the TT / transmission mount you may well need to rig up some extensions joined to extensions joined to extensions with the odd universal joint to reach in from the mid of the car, rearward and atop the TT to get at the top two mounting bots.
Dan - from my reading of the post, his engine is already out, so no short-cuts necessary?

Yes, indeed the engine is out, and I know how to rebuild the torque tube.
There was no need to slide the trans/TT back in order to remove the engine. I removed the engine without the clutchpack, so no issues.
Just wondering if there are any shortcuts on removing the TT when I already have the engine out :-)

Damn I should have done this when I had the engine out.

I don't think there are any tricks to getting the TT out under your engine-out condition. Remove the exhuast and heatshields. Loosen the rear TT shaft clamp bolt. Remove the crossbraces under the TT and drop the front down enough so you can get to the rear top TT to tranny bolts. Undo the rest of those bolts and slide the tube forward and out of the tranny. It's a bit heavy and cumbersome doing this alone, but the shaft will come out. Just don't drop it.

Jim Chambers did his TT R&R in a 90GT with an engine in the way, couple of threads on it here:
